Alabama passed a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest

So now only criminals will get abortions?

I wonder where all the rapey GOP senators and other legislators in Alabama are going to have to go to get their girlfriends' and daughters' abortions?

Is Roy Moore going to have to flee now?
 
I guess they get their Christian approval with this?

Seems so silly heh, I would estimate most people that want abortions vote left anyhow.. so basically... they are trying to get the left to have more babies (voters)?

'Bama isn't that big of a state, if someone REALLY wanted an abortion I would think it's not that difficult to take a 1 day road trip to a nearby state.
 
Would be great if there is a massive exodus from Alabama for those who disagree with this. Then the shithole state can rot to death.

Laws rarely apply to the rich, and this law is no exception. GOP senators have plenty of money to fly their mistresses to another state to get an abortion.

well, you'd be surprised. The law coming up in Georgia criminalizes anyone that goes out of state to receive an abortion. Something like 30 years in prison, Murder, blah blah blah.

God that's pathetic. I don't even know how that would hold-up in court.

To my knowledge (Correct me if I'm wrong) a state doesn't have jurisdiction authority to charge someone with a crime in another state...because... it's their jurisdiction... deeerrp.

Plus I don't know how they would find out to charge someone - medical records are private. Seems entirely unenforceable.

I guess the reasoning is that:

--it is a federal crime (Really, can states enforce federal crimes? I guess not--but if they define the act as murder, legally, it defaults to a federal crime, right? I guess this is a separate issue tied into this whole clusterfuck)
--So, if you engage in a federal crime, murder being kinda serious, in any other state and return to your home state, there is no jurisdiction. you can still be prosecuted.

The way to get around it would be to just never return, right? Obviously that isn't reasonable for the average person, and is monumentally stupid for the state. But these states are run by ignorant morons, so go figure.

I mentioned this in the concurrent Georgia thread (I think), but this sort of thing could end up creating a modern Underground Railroad, yet again. Flee the south, of course, if you want to be treated as a human being and not state property, right?

Where have we seen this type of model before? hmmm

Don't sell the GOP short. They are thinking of that too and starting to add jail time for anyone travelling to another state to legally obtain abortions too. Georgia already has done it.

You know what's going on, I hope -- the whole point is to force a Supreme Court challenge now that it's rigged in conservatives' favor and hope that they effectively overturn Roe v. Wade. I suspect that even a biased SCOTUS would reject the Alabama and Georgia laws, but that isn't stopping southern Republicans from fantasizing about imposing a theocracy.
 
So...No six-week window here: abortion is illegal any time from conception onward. Docs get up to 99 years in the slammer for performing one, 10 years for attempting to abort one. No exclusions for rape or incest, but there is one for the life of the mother.

I'm not sure what attempting to perform an abortion means in a practical sense: botching one? Setting up for one? A patient making an appointment for an abortion?

So... a fertilized egg is a person from the moment of conception, as long as it's inside a woman's body. But if it's in a lab, it's not.

I think we can all figure out what that means.

If pro-lifers wanted Roe to be overturned, shouldn't they be trying to make their laws sound as reasonable and un-onerous as possible? By making it so stark and ridiculous, they make it less likely they'd get what they want.

Just to add to this Alabama also views any kind of funding for medical care as socialist!!! so there is nothing to aid these children or adult victims of rape and incest deal with the mental and physical costs of being forced to carry children to term and beyond.

Just a complete and utter fuck over of women in the state.
 
Can a fetus get child support payments if it is a person? Also if the mother is not a citizen but the fetus was conceived in the US does that mean the fetus cannot be deported, since if it is a person it would be considered a US citizen?

Then you just build up hyper-concentrated "like mind" states. Moving away just further concretes republican senators from Alabama and their stronghold on electoral votes. That's the real issue that liberals face. If you build up liberal strongholds like California and much of the west coast, you aren't gaining any senate control or electoral votes.

From what I understand, I believe I heard that one of these laws does recognize the fetus as a person and does extend such things as tax credits and welfare.
