Air fryers are awesome - way better than convection ovens. Mine makes great rice too

Pics or ban!

My 2021 goal is to perfect flatbread pizza. I've had some really amazing flatbread pizza (most are meh, but some have been really fantastic!). I plan on eating a lot of pizza next year lol.
I know you weren't asking me, but here's the pizza I made last week, also on a pre-made crust because I grabbed a Boboli on a whim :p

Err I cannot reach the fan blades that way. It's not too bad for the fan in the oven since it is perpendicular to the pans so a lot less splattering. And the oven fan is not covered with a mesh. And the oven has a torch everything mode that is just not possible in the air fryer due to plastic construction.

They ahould have made the fan mesh a slide out just like the trays, secured with a couple of screws in the front edge.

Ah I thought you meant in air fryers. Another win for them!
My question, deeply basted in my buttery ignorance: Is my current IP already also an Air Fryer or is this yet another incipient spending opportunity for me?

Maybe? Some can do both and some can't

What's the difference in air frying quality between the instant pot looking cylindrical air fryers and the toaster oven looking type ones?

Obviously the toaster oven type ones can cook things like toast and fit pizzas, while the big pot looking ones can even do a whole chicken. But which does air frying better?

I did the mistake of trying to make a stir fry in my actifry and it ruined the paddle, it caramelized the sauce on it and I can't seem to get it clean. I just leave it in the dishwasher, maybe eventually it will all come off. From that point on I will only use it for fries. At least when I use it for that it's easy enough to clean. I have a basket that I use for things like sausage but that is hard to clean too. Even the dishwasher does not get it clean. Basically need to let it soak, run it through the dishwasher, and repeat that several times before it finally comes out clean.

I still prefer my conventional oven for things like:

1. Bacon
2. Casseroles
3. Cookies

I have a love/hate relationship with airfryers. I'm on my 4th unit (not in a bad way). Started out with a Philips XL back in 2016, then went bigger with an Oyama glass unit from Walmart, then went jumbo with a Breville Smart Oven Air, and then went even bigger with the Anova Precision Oven. The last two are multi-function devices, so they can do other things too. Airfryers are a fancy marketing name for an oven with a turbo convection fan. There is no frying involved, but if you adapt specific recipes to it & tweak until you get success, it can delivery pretty good results. I do wings a few times a month in my airfryer straight from the fridge & they come out pretty good! They do tend to create a lot of smoke. I have a floor fan in front of mine & use it by a window I can open to vent.

Things airfryers are really good at: (@RossMAN where you at)

1. Reheating frozen fried foods like chicken nuggets, fish sticks, French fries, tater tots, crispy crowns, etc.
2. Wings
3. Crispy spring rolls (super easy to make from scratch) & also to some extent egg rolls, gyoza potstickers, etc.
4. Hot dogs (cut slits & also toast the bun)
5. Churros
6. Reheating pizza

For me, it's kind of a convenience thing - I can throw stuff in & have it come out crispier than a microwave. So think of it like an upgraded microwave for certain foods. Here are a couple of my favorite airfryer websites:

Try soaking it in boiling water then scrubbing it with Bartender's Friend.

Yes, I do mean air fryer is hard to clean.
This is one of the reasons why wife and I have decided against buying air fryer. Those fans are a bitch to clean from what I read. And we don't eat much food that would benefit from air fryer since we make and cook most things from scratch. Air fryer is ideal for people who buy frozen deep fried food they can reheat. I don't want to buy something that will take up counter space just to reheat some French fries.

::shrug:: we make fresh food in ours all the time, and it's really not that hard to clean at all. Been a fan of fried brussels sprouts lately.

Oh man I never even thought of checking the fan on mine. I'm almost scared to check lol. It does not look like it would be that easy to get to without a full disassembly so never even considered that it's something you'd have to clean.

Mmmm, yeah. Just a knife, some olive oil, a liberal amount of garlic powder and an oven of any sort and you're good to go!

They don't get crispy like that. High heat with convection fans allow that to happen.

Because it doesn't need to be cleaned? If it did, you'd think they would mention it...

Is the fan on the side? That does make it more splash proof.

Or they just want you to buy a new one when it is rancid.

I finish them off under the broiler. Likely not as easy or great as a convection oven, but, eh.

Want to try something with those? After you're done cooking them, toss them in this sauce I came up with:

Per pound of sprouts:
- 3 tbs olive oil
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- 2 thinly sliced cloves of garlic
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- squeeze juice from one lime
- 1/2 tsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame seeds

Heat the oil in a small saucepan, brown the garlic a bit, then add the salt and liquid ingredients. Reduce the mixture over medium heat, then add the sesame seeds. Toss the sprouts in the sauce and bake them off another 3-5 minutes.

Came up with this over Thanksgiving and it's spread to my family and friends :D

besides the Phillips XXL anybody else got a good air fryer they have that can still fit a whole chicken in it? I'd like to be able to do a whole chicken if possible, though not 100% required.
