That being said, I'm still not sure why it has gathered quite the following it has. I mean it is surprisingly good for what it is, but 29 pages of pony pictures and 4chan going insane for a while. Seems a bit much. I will definitely finished the series and likely keep up with season 2...
It's an amusing show with lead female characters and it
doesn't suck. Yes there's the one character who is the fashion/boys one, but 1) The fashion thing is related to her running her own business, and 2) The "boys" thing only really came up in one or two episodes, and it wasn't really a major theme of the whole episode. And the animators seem to have fun with expressions.
And they sometimes slip in some vocabulary that's a bit more advanced than you might expect. One threw me - when Fluttershy was "politely" critiquing her new dress in one episode, she referenced "the
armcye's tight." It's easily heard as a muddled "The arm's a size tight." It seems that she's actually using some terminology that's a bit above that.
I think someone on the animation team also spent some time watching sonic boom and explosion footage. They did the whole supersonic shock wave thing, and also the elimination of cloud formations after the sonic rainboom's blast front moved through.
And it's just....you know...entertaining.
...but it lacks an over arching story line (so far) and thus is just a series of 25 minute quick watches for some lols.
I would however chose to watch MLP over Spongebob or many of the numerous other "kid" cartoons that air these days. MLP is childish without being stupid (Spongebob) and I think that is what sets it apart.
Favorite Pony: Pinkie Pie
That was allegedly Hasbro's doing, because in their opinion, the show's originally-intended target audience wouldn't be able (or perhaps willing) to keep up with any kind of ongoing arc. Because, you know, kids would
never read books or anything of that nature which takes more than 5 minutes to go through from start to finish. (Anyone else here remember the Boxcar Children?)
Maybe it'll go down like Reboot - initially censored to death in the first season, then facing cancellation, they pull out the stops and send the system into open war. We'll find that Celestia really does live up to the Trollestia name*, and the mane cast will incite a violent rebellion. (Violent but fun.:awe
* - (Now seriously, Rarity and the Wonderbolts were falling to their deaths while Celestia was
right there in the stadium, and she did
nothing to help.)
