Due to this thread, and with a desire to give it a fair chance, I watched episode 14 on YouTube this morning. Ya know what? I still say it's a POS. It's a child's cartoon, that teaches children core life lessons. Not a bad thing, but not really suitable for anyone who's hit the double digits in age. It's bland, trite, and there's nothing more than you see on the surface. It's a kids show in every sense of the word.
Watch the pilot! The show's character driven, so of course it's going to suck if you're just watching nameless characters prance about on screen. You ain't gonna get anywhere unless you've been introduced to them and so have some background to work with.
Episode 14 is about them asserting their opinions (based on their personalities) over Rarity's choices and it backfiring -- it doesn't set up the core personalities upon which those opinions are based, so the humility that follows has no context -- you wouldn't know exactly what it is they've learned. 14 doesn't even put their personalities in context like any of the action/adventure episodes would've.
Would you introduce someone to
Firefly at "Trash" or "The Message"?
The pilot of MLP is the place to start. After the characters are introduced you could jump around without missing out on much in the way of dependencies, because the pilot sets up most everything except the Cutie-Mark Crusaders. (Which needs episode 12 before 17, 18, and 23.)
