Due to this thread, and with a desire to give it a fair chance, I watched episode 14 on YouTube this morning. Ya know what? I still say it's a POS. It's a child's cartoon, that teaches children core life lessons. Not a bad thing, but not really suitable for anyone who's hit the double digits in age. It's bland, trite, and there's nothing more than you see on the surface. It's a kids show in every sense of the word.

watch ep16 and get back to us.

Yeah, 14 might not have been the best one to start out on.

As suggested, yes, try out Episode 16.
I also liked Episode 10 - a good old Zerg Rush story. :D

But in any case, apparently it's not for everyone.
Neither was MST3K, which was easily the best thing that was ever shown on cable TV, ever. :p

Watch the pilot! The show's character driven, so of course it's going to suck if you're just watching nameless characters prance about on screen. You ain't gonna get anywhere unless you've been introduced to them and so have some background to work with.

Episode 14 is about them asserting their opinions (based on their personalities) over Rarity's choices and it backfiring -- it doesn't set up the core personalities upon which those opinions are based, so the humility that follows has no context -- you wouldn't know exactly what it is they've learned. 14 doesn't even put their personalities in context like any of the action/adventure episodes would've.

Would you introduce someone to Firefly at "Trash" or "The Message"?
The pilot of MLP is the place to start. After the characters are introduced you could jump around without missing out on much in the way of dependencies, because the pilot sets up most everything except the Cutie-Mark Crusaders. (Which needs episode 12 before 17, 18, and 23.)

Did you read the description of that episode before watching? It's one of the girlier episodes and not one of the better ones. Same goes for the slumber party episode. Pilot aside, I think 19 and 25 are good ones to get into for anyone that thinks the show is meant entirely for elementary school children, being a bit darker and more humorous (25 reaches almost Ren & Stimpy-level at a point). The morals of most of the episodes may be obvious to adults ("core life lessons") but no different from Hey Arnold!, early Spongebob, or any other good 90's/00's children's cartoons.

I just finished reading through this entire thread. I kept it open in a firefox window over a few days and looked through a few pages at a time.

Result:
1) I watched the show
2) My avatar... After IceBergSlim's post I felt slightly ashamed, also figured people on FS/FT might not like it and I have to sell lots of hardware in about a week.
3) I want cupcakes
4) I want some embroidery
5) I almost want a poster/art to hang on my wall
6) Trying to think of a way to decorate my tower with something MLP related
7) Excited for season 2
8) I now like HamburgerBoy more

I had a good laugh at this one.

You watched the show, didn't like it, and simply gave your reasons why. More than I'd hope for from most; I was nagging a friend about it a while back and he said he watched it for about a minute. Although, I showed my friends Hasbro's California Gurls spoof and they enjoyed it, most likely due to Katy Perry being the source material.

I find it amusing that MLP draws so much ire. With rare exceptions, all pony shenanigans stay in this thread, yet some people can't resist stirring things up here, or (perhaps unintentionally) making disparaging remarks regarding ponies in other threads.

Super agree on 4 and 5. One of these days I'm going to order something from Evadman (assuming he's still making stuff...and maybe will take a custom request).

Oh... nothing. :hmm:
But looking back at your thread see I posted a screenshot of Know Your Meme. Seems that in the last month the pony entry got 340k more views, 300 more videos, 2000 more pictures, and 2600 more comments. And Season 1 wrapped up in May...

(Each month there are more pony pictures posted than any other meme on the site has in its entirety. [I think 60's Spider-Man is #2 with 1400 total.] At this point there may be as many pony pics as there are lolcats on icanhascheezburger.)

Edit: Looking at icanhazcheezburger... it seems they have 1861 pages @ 7 pics a page, for 13,027 lolcats.

...there are 14,011 pictures of ponies.

Episode 16 was fantastic. Seeing Fluttershy go crazy at the end was hilarious. There were other lol worthy moments that I am forgetting, but a very good episode. You guys were right when you said the show picks up and gets more amusing in the later episodes.

Edit: Derpy randomly being in there made me lol as well.

You'll enjoy her segments in the season finale. ;)

Episode 25 - also amusing.

I'm getting back into the ponies. Is Youtube the best place to watch online?

A brain fart I had a few weeks ago has finally made it to Youtube.

Oh well.

:\
It's a mindless song just meant to line up with the commercial's imagery, so it doesn't really cross over well into a parody. The only good part was the bells. For the rest it might as well have been silent (and it probably would've been much improved that way) -- I thought it was that flat.

... yeah, I just watched it muted and it actually was better. I laughed at the brohoof and dawwed a bit at Fluttershy at the end. (sorry)

Anyway, here's something I just found. Side-by-side of Equestria Girls and California Gurls. (I had actually never heard California Gurls, so I had no idea it was that close)

And now after having watched California Gurls on its own, I have to say the Pony version is considerably better. "Once you party with uh-is"? WTF? Who the hell tries to string out "us" into two syllables?

Episode 17 and 18 are pretty much useless.

Well 17 does have Fluttershy's weird squeak at 10:00. And it had "The Stare." The show needed 4 or 5 more lines of Sweetie Belle's song, though. That ended too early.

vv, I like the Cutie Mark Crusaders too. But they're nowhere near as good as the mane cast. If the show had been 25 episodes of CMC nobody would be watching it. They make for a cute little side-plot, but they can't carry a show.

Everyone hates on the CMC but I like them. :(

Maybe 17 isn't that great (although Sweetie Belle's R&B version of Fluttershy's song is uber cute <3 ) but 18 is plenty funny. I mean "With our Cutie Marks we will rock Equestria, we use our stomachs to digestia" is Judas Priest-worthy lyrical genius and their theme song is just as good. Plus, they just so cute and wubbable.

I love their choice of sound effect for Scootaloo's wings, though I can't quite place it. Maybe a dirt bike or something like that?
