Detroit police shoot deaf man who threatened officers with rake
http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/08/31/rake.shooting.ap/index.html
DETROIT (AP) -- A deaf and mute man brandishing a metal-toothed rake was shot to death by a Detroit police officer unaware that the man could not hear his calls to halt.

Talk about police brutality, it shows what guncrazy idiots are in the american police.

hmm, this is a tough one, is the cop at fault? honestly i dont know, the cop was 23 years old, by no means a veteran, but no rookie either (i assume). so why was this man waving the rake in the first place?

dont make such a quick call about gunzealots in the pd, wait till all the facts come up and then make a jundegement call.

He wasnt a veterian and he was only 23years old, a beginner. This is what you say. If he was to young and "green" then why the hell do you give him a gun??

One vote here for the cop. Believe it or not, deaf/mutes look exactly like regular people. How the fvck was he supposed to know the difference? Threatening a cop is a good way to get shot, whether you can hear or not.

OMF! How hard is it to disarm a man with a rake? I wouldn't consider a rake to be a deadly weapon either...

Couldn't he of just took the rake from him? Or atleast just shot him in the leg/foot...no need to kill him.

A man waving a metal toothed rake? It would be pretty fscking hard to disarm him...you wouldn't be able to get in close.

Pepper spray could have been another option, but I trust the officer's judgement.

Police are trained to shoot for body mass. That means torso. No, he couln't have just shot his leg or foot.

"If someones coming at them with a 4 foot metal rake intending to use it as a weapon, what the hell are they supposed to do."

What would you do - assuming you weren't carrying a weapon? Obviously, step back. Killing a person who comes at you with a rake is B.S!

A police officers life is not in immediate danger, as they easily could of moved out of the way. That Cop that shot him should be punished.

Rudee...

Intimidation & fear can do a lot to someone's judgement. His response may not have been in the best judgement, but as a society we need to support him. He was doing his job, & got put in a very bad situation. It's not his fault, & he handled it exactly as we told him to.

So STFU.

Cops in alot of areas are trained to shoot to wound first, as long as they have the chance too. But we were not there, and do not know exactly what happened, only what the press is stating. As for punishment, the cop will have to live with taking somebodys life as long as he lives, and his judgement in the situation, so I don't think any penaltys the Police may give him will really matter.

Ok, then we have come to the conclusion that this man was to young and to unexpereanced to handle a gun, and cops use guns, so this man should by no means be a cop.

"...but as a society we need to support him."

BS

"...he handled it exactly as we told him to."

More BS

Cops are becoming way too quick to shoot and supporting them when they screw up is exactly the wrong thing to do. C'mon Viper, it was a rake!

C'mon Viper, it was a rake!

Depending on whether we're talking leaf rake, gravel rake, or whatever, the damage inflicted could range from losing an eye to a metal tine, or getting a whole row of them embedded 3" into your skull. I guarantee you that if I hit you in the head with a gravel rake, it's going to penetrate.

wtf are you talking about man? honestly, then when would you give a cop a gun? until he goes through his first shoot out? or until he gets his first wound and lives from it? the "bad guys" are carrying around semi automatic guns...what else can you fight them with?

as for experience and being a cop, how else will you stop being a rookie, by watching videos? reading books? watching old westerns? NO by going out there and apply what they have learned.

it was only a rake.

none of us were there, but like it was stated before, the cop made a jundgement call, the man could have inflicted harm on the cop, the cop defended himself.

Why do so many americans have to be so bloody gad damn paranoid, you think that every criminal on the street has a frigging uzi and thats why the cop must cary a gun and shoot every possible criminal.

Most criminals are petty thiefs, they do not carry semi automatic guns, the world is not created by Hollywood.

/me thinks Czar has never been to Detroit.

/me also thinks that the media has a bias. We are only given what the paper wants us to read. To me, the stupid article made more out of the fact that the man was black, and that the NAACP was pissed, than they were concerned that a man had been killed.

czar: theres someone in my house.
police: really, does he have a gun?
czar: i dont know, i dont think so.
police: ok, we will send out unarmed unit to talk him to death.
czar: thanks.

wow that seems like a really nice scenerio.

Any cop, with all the training they receive, ought to be able to disarm a rake wielding perp, (without having to put a bullet in him).

Viper:

The trick is to hit me. Me thinks that would be tougher than you are thinking.

That cop had multiple options available to him and he chose deadly force. At the very least, he should no longer be a cop.

Um, if someone came at me with a rake, I'd be pretty f**king scared too. No foolin around with "disarming" someone who could seriously injure you.
