Not the cop's fault.

The deaf guy should've been able to see the gun, or the cop being serious.

At least he can lift both his hands in the air to cool down the cop.

Plus, the cop deals with tricky criminals everyday. They can't take a chance, otherwise they'll be dead real young.

I'm for the cop.

WTF is he supposed to do?? Man attacks cop with rake. Cop shoots him. Fine by me. Unless the guy is going to wear a "I am deaf and blind" sign, how the hell is the cop and anyone else supposed to know.

FFS, why is anyone attacking a cop with a rake in the first place?

You know what realy hurts? The claw end of a hammer.

Reach isn't as good as a rake, but very effective if you can get in with it.

Definitely worth a bullet in defense.

The rake by itself may not have been deadly. But what would you have said had the guy gotten a lucky swing and even knocked the wind out of the cop. There would then be a gun sitting there in a holster just waiting to be taken.

I would have taken the guy out.

What if the cop had waited and a kid walked by and got killed?
The officer was not only protecting himself but removing a threat to
life. Deadly force was properly used in my opinion.

I guess the cop should of waited until the man hurt or killed and just plain got tired of swinging a rake. Yeah, good call.

It is neat the way you only posted the part of the article that suited your needs and ignored the rest.

A rake can be considered a polearm. It can be extremely lethal. Im talking if you were hit in the right place, it would kill you with just one hit. Just like a baseball bat or anythin blunt, pointy or sharp can kill you.

The human body is just too damn fragile.

Think I'll buy a Kevlar body suit tomorrow.

Being our first time out, I don't think I would've given the guy any special treatment. I'd wait and see how goes and maybe on the second... hey wait a minute. :|

Napoleon said the 4-foot rake was a dangerous weapon, and officers are trained to shoot to kill when threatened with deadly force. He added that pepper spray is not intended for use against people who present a threat to life.

Simple logic here people.
If (life == threatened) { Stop_threat(); }

If the cop decides to use a gun, so be it. I'm completely on the cops side. And if you don't trust a cops judgement, would you rather be under marshall law? Because thats the only alternative.

Cops side for me.

Just a side bit of knowledge. My brother got attacked with a garden fork. Damn if the guy that attacked him didn't get attempted murder for that.

Also, what the hell does the fact that the guy was black have to do with it. White, Black , Blue, Orange, what ever his skin color, he asked to be shot by going after a cop.

As long as I'm ranting, anybody else feel the NAACP needs to SHUT THE F*CK UP! They seem to feel that if it deals with a black person, there is racism involved. Not even that but they are even going after anything that remembers slavery in the past. (I.E.-Calling for boycott of Virginia because of it's Confederate history month or the confederate flag flying over the South Carolina state house.) It appears to me that this should be up to the states residents, not to mention that removing all traces of the past is generally considered a bad thing. We should be learning from our past, not erasing it.

The NAACP, while it may have had it's time and place, has definitely outworn it's welcome. Bet if it'd been a black cop & a white dude with the rake they would have tried to paint the rake wielder as a racist who was out to get the fine, upstanding black cop. Who friggin' cares if he was black? It doesn't make a damned bit of difference.

I'm no racist, if you fvcking dare to threaten my life, or my family's, I'll kill you no matter what color you are.

searcher,

You had the luxury of going out in your yard and testing YOUR theory as to whether a rake could be used as a deadly weapon against YOU. I don't think the cop had this luxury!

Anybody who won't put a rake down for a cop who is pointing a gun at him and yelling for him to put it down is seriosly mental and should not be trusted....If I was the cop I would have shot the fscker!

This was on the local media quite a bit. The man's neighbors were all gathered around and screaming at the cops that the man was deaf. This is not the first time excessive force was used by the Detroit PD. Unless you are tied down and helpless I don't think a rake is a life-threatening weapon, not as long as you have room to move about/out of the way. I wasn't at the scene though, maybe the cop was cornered.

Like I´v said before, I live in a country that people live in, same as usa, same foundation. Cops here dont even have guns because they dont have to, the reason cops in usa have to have guns is because people like you who support the kill on sight idea, you want to use force to deal with problems, you want to remove the problem from your little world, you dont want to face the real problem, the problem is your way of thinking, this way of thinking cant lead to a good ending, lets just see how your country will be after 10-20 years.

USA is becoming a police state. Becoming a cop gives you the right to kill anyone, at worst you will be suspended from your job for few weeks.

Actually, this is how the USA has always been. People like this guy are a serious threat to our communities, and Police are there to neutralize such threats.

I really don't care about Iceland, it's a little joke of a country. If you're happy there, fine, but don't tell us how things should be here because you don't live here. Your police don't have guns because circumstances are far different there.

This cop will probably get hung out to dry anyway, to satisfy the know-nothing hypocritical bigots that make up the NAACP, who are a media darling.

Citizens have owned firearms in this country for hundreds of years. What will change in the next 10-20?

Another vote for the cop.

It's always easy to judge after the fact. In a standoff, you have to go with what you know.

1) There is a man acting in a threatening manner
2) He has a metal rake
3) A 911 call was made indicating that he may be acting violent
4) He has allegedly threatened his parent with a knife
5) A knife may still be on his person

A decision was made based on available information and I wholly believe it is the correct one.

The "activists" are doing nothing more than advancing their agendas. They are making the man out to be "innocent" as if he was a bystander. They are playing on the sympathies of people with this deaf/mute garbage.

Czar,

It must be nice living in Never-Never land. What color is the sky in your world? Please stay there, because the rest of us are enjoying reality too much to have it spoiled.

I will cast my vote for the police officer as well, anyone that can see a cop pointing a gun at them and yelling should know enough to at least run. To continue advancing towards the officer with a metal toothed object could definitely be considered a threat.
