C'mon folks, you're not using your heads any better than this cop did. IT WAS A RAKE!! Think about it for just a minute. I am unarmed, you swing a rake at me, I have two options, step back or step forward and put your fukin' lights out. Yes, if I stand still I am sure you could penetrate my skull with a rake. Guess what...I'm not gonna stand still. DUH! I would be willing to bet you cannot swing a rake fast enough that I could not step away or step into your swing and be unharmed.

I think this kid grew up on too many cop shows.

What if it had been a baseball bat? That's the thing you are failing to see: A rake, used as a weapon, is deadly! Just like a bat, except that bats receive much more attention due to their widespread use &amp; gang image. WTF is the difference between the two? A rake has a longer reach, &amp; although it isn't as heavy necessarily, it could easily inflict serious damage.

Guys, sure it is a rake, but the man was unresponsive. He was deaf. The cop didn't know that. No matter what the weapon, from a rake to a uzi, its a potentially deadly weapon. I could see if the man was able to hear the cops and put the rake down or something that the shooting would be uneccesary, BUT HE DID NOT DROP THE RAKE. He (presumably) held the rake in an offensive manner despite constant threats by the officer - that right there is reason enough to justify the shooting. The cop not knowing he was deaf is just a bizzare circumstance in the issue - we all make faux pas all the time like this (just not at such a level ).

The fact is he did what he should have done. You have to obey cops. Besides, even if he was deaf he should have realized that he shouldn't be waving a rake offensivly in front of a cop with a gun pointed at him. That's just stupid.

Guys think of this too - a 4 foot rake is SHORT. VERY SHORT. What does that mean? You could swing that sucker around like crazy. Weight and its odd size isn't a problem. A 4 foot rake would be a VERY dangerous weapon - more than you think.

there was a guy here in town who was shot three times by a police officer and killed for going after him with a shower curtain rod. The officer warned him several times (verbally and with body actions)...the guy continued to go after the officer until he had no choice.

Alot of people were up in arms about it until witnesses came forward and basically said the officer waited until he felt he was in real danger and that the guy was out to take his head off.

Don't hang this cop just yet. Until you hear both sides of the story its just another sad story with a sadder ending. Remember that police officers are not trained to run from someone weilding a weapon but to stop him.

When someone points a gun at you, especially a cop, you drop to your damn knees and put your hands behind your head. Doing anything else is stupid. I'm no physician, but as far as I know, being stupid has nothing to do with being deaf and dumb.

Have you ever been attacked by anyone with a weapon? I had a little toy rake swung in my face once as a kid by a neighborhood bully. I got a nice cut right above my eye; he could have blinded me had it been an inch lower. If we're talking about a gravel rake here, we're talking a seriously deadly weapon.

I am not saying that a rake is not a weapon or that it could not be a deadly weapon. I am saying that a man did not have to die. I am saying that this cop had other options and he chose to take anothers life rather than excercise less extreme measures. I am saying that deadly force should be the last option in a police officers arsenal. I am saying that all too often these days it has become their first choice. I am bothered by the trend.

Under the circumstances, it was his only choice. You might be willing to bet your life on it, but he was not under obligation to bet his! He was authorized, &amp; fully capable, to use deadly force. And he did. Think about it. One cop, one lunatic with a rake. Cop has gun, lunatic has rake. Cop wins. Big deal, that's how it should be.

I for one have been attacked with a 3ft wooden dowel, about an inch across. Is this a deadly weapon? In the hands of a person who knows how to use it, it can kill in one blow. Luckily the punk kid who attacked me didn't know how to use it and went for my knees with it. I blocked it with my foot, and then twisted and stomped his wrist. He droped it and I picked it up and put him out with a swift blow to the back of the head.

But if he had come at me and used the butt end to my throat, and then used a forceful blow to the back of the neck, I would be dead. Instead he was kind to me.
