So besides the mouse and keyboard, what advantages does the PC offer up over the console?

Why do you game on the PC instead of on the console?

teh awesome leetness of my rig...

Honestly, because it's more of a hobby than console gaming, and IMO the cost of building a decent gaming PC versus a console results in a better price for usage for the hardware that I get.

Well, for me, there are tons of reasons.

I already own a nice PC for my home business, and the cost of a video card is cheaper than the cost of a console.
Free on-line play.
I can upgrade hardware when I feel it necessary.
I can download/install mods for games.

The one problem I have is the lack of good games available for the PC. I only play 1st and 3rd person shooters so, I get maybe 1-3 games a year.

Oh, and mouse/keyboard rocks! :D

Well, you're probably going to need the computer to download porn anyhow, so why not just consolidate all of your recreation onto one system?

Mouse/keyboard and mods (and greater customizability in general) are the main attractions for me.

(My reasons, they are not in order)

My TV Sucks ( 27" Sony Wega Trinitron versus the Dell 2001FP on my PC)

No console ports of the games that I play most of the time

I can only use a keyboard / mouse... maybe a joystick or a steering wheel for flight / racing games, console controllers are out of the question

Far superior resolutions / graphics on the PC

Far larger online experience on the PC

I do not have to toss the entire device when I upgrade my PC

A single PC can be used for media center tasks, software development , office activities, and gaming

Player made / third party mods (Elder Scrolls series anyone?) are nonexistent for the most part on consoles.

Continued support of games through patches (until recently, patching console games did not happen)

I will take the Red Orchestra community over the halo xbox live community anyday.

No changing CDs / DVDs between games on the PC (Alcohol 52% freeware edition to the rescue)

I can fix a PC if it breaks, which rarely happens because I only put high quality components inside it.

Before Crysis/DX10 comes out, consoles are closing in on the visual gap in pc and consoles, especially with 1080p support. It also won't be too hard for consoles to support a basic keyboard and mouse. Only thing is the anti-aliasing and I don't really mind the jaggies after I get used to them with my old rig.

For me, gameplay can't be beat on a PC. Try playing Swat 4 on an Xbox. No way would it compare to the pc version. Just like BF2.

Other than gameplay/multiplayer I see the console gaining ground and being about on par with the PC in the next few years. But we'll just have to see what DX10 shows us.

MODs and the fact that over half of the games I'm playing right now aren't available on consoles (although I'm sure I could find console games I'd like that aren't on the PC either). And I'd have the PC (minus the high end video card) anyway.

Honestly, I think both systems have their own respective strengths and weaknesses, which is why I've never been 100% PC gamer or 100% console gamer. I'm not much of an online gamer, so for PC I turn more to strategy games. In general I think PC games are more cerebral and more intelligent in their design. I enjoy the wider range of offerings on the PC. From mods, to indie games, to expansion packs, PC games go far beyond the traditional boxed retail copy and offer a much broader range of gaming experiences. And of course, I like the upgrade-ability and customize-ability of PC's.

I use consoles for more laid back gameplay. I play a lot of RPG's as well as action adventure games on consoles. I also play most of my shooters on a console (I know, no KBM, c'est travesty). I still play the big shooters, like HL2 and probably Crysis, on PC, but like I said I'm not much of an online gamer and I've long since become more than proficient with a game pad for controlling an FPS. So when given the option I prefer the laid back setting of my living room for that kind of single player experience.

Really, I've never much been into the whole console vs PC thing. I'll sway back and forth a little as different games come out for each respective platform, but I'll probably always play on both platforms.

I play on my PC for it's:
- Input device.
- FPS game library and fan base.
- World of Warcraft (yes this is considered as a generic reason).

I play on my xbox 360 for it's:
- Guitar Heroes II

Well obvious PC has 3 pros and xbox360 only has one...

1. RTS games

2. You can emulate older consoles

3. PC can be an all in one piece of hardware which is convenient

4. Games are cheap, and get cheaper very quickly

5. Starcraft, the best game ever created, is on the PC. With the custom maps theres something new every day! Its kept me entertained for 9 years, with infrequent breaks.

1. I already own a computer. I can game on it, or I can buy a second one which isn't upgradeable and only plays games...
2. FPSs / MMORPGs / RTSs
3. Listen to music / watch TV while gaming, on the same screen / platform

:confused: Why attack console developers? What about the PC developers who release buggy games that don't work until a patch released after retail? I... just don't get the potshot at console developers who aren't even responsible for backwards compatibility on Xbox. :Disgust;

it was games like these that got me addictive to PC gaming ever since, just to name a few:
Jagged Alliance
Heroes of Might & Magic
WarCraft
Betrayal at Krondor
SimCity
Transport Tycoon Deluxe

Well, I dont love Oblivion, but the piss-poor menu they designed for the Xbox 360 and carried over to the computer can be fixed with mods.
Morrowind had about 1000 useful mods when it was king of the hill.
Oblivion has quite a few already.

Cant really think of anything new. The games tend to be a little cheaper. LOTS more mods and maps for games.

The computer sees a lot of good RTS games that never get ported over or ported poorly and ignored. Have not yet seen a good TBS or a grognard game on any console.
Flight sims.
Quality RPG's, like Baldurs Gate and Deus EX. (They made console version but they were horrible.)

But the main benefit really is the mouse. I dont even know if console fanboys realize how much they are being held back by the gamepad, especially for shooters.

The only time a gamepad is superior is for sports games, and EA is totally killing that genre so it doesnt matter much.

EDIT: I tried playing Battle For Middle Earth II on an XBox. Good GAWD! That was painful.

EDIT2:
I just thought of a REALLY good reason. Backwards compatibility.

I can still play most of my DOS/Win95 games on XP. Not to mention many pure DOS games in a box or with an Emulator. Most of my Win98 games work great too.
I got a Win32 executable for Duke3D that works awesome.

With emulators I can play NES, SNES, all gameboy, SMS, Sega Genesis and PS1 games, and those are just the systems I like.

In the console world, not everything is supported on the PS3 or the Xbox 360, even with all the special patches available.
And Nintendo never even tried to be backwards compatible.
BUT, they do have a crapload of classics that were rereleased on the Wii.

These are about my same reasons as well.

I can give you a couple of reasons why I think console gaming is better than PC gaming :D

That comment was more for the manufacturers. The game devs can be assholes too.

Another advantage is that PCs can patch bugs out.

Consoles ,on the other hand, require replacement discs.

Wii Guitar Hero III owners need new disc to fix mono issue

For a game so intensely focussed on music, the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock shipped for Wii with a rather unfortunate, but critical flaw. Although the first entry of the franchise on Wii advertises that it supports stereo sound output, with additional provisions made specifically for Dolby Pro Logic II, gamers quickly discovered that game only sends a monaural signal.

Unfortunately, such a fix will not be a simple issue of downloading a patch.

I guess the console fans are correct in that you do not have to patch console games to get them to run correctly, you just have to get a replacement disc;)
