Actual driving lessons?

Hey everyone, do places exist that actually teach you how to drive in certain situations?

I dozed off for a second today and took an exit at like 65 mph because i was disoriented and half in it already when I came to. I hit the breaks hard and turned with it while the car shook like crazy then i turned the wheel the other way when i started turning into the rail a bit. Car did a 180 and came to a complete stop out of nowhere. I was like 😵. So I'm sure there are MUCH better ways to deal with this (besides not falling asleep....) but all I find online are defensive driving courses for 15 year olds...

Also just out of curiosity, I was driving a 95 camry when this happened. If I was in say... a Porsche would it have just felt fine slowed down and took the turn exit compared to a normal crappy car shaking out of control?

braking in the middle of a corner you are taking too fast is the worst thing you can do.

EDIT: if you were driving a porsche it would have been able to take a exit at 65mph without slowing down, hell my CRX with upgraded suspenstion could have pulled it off. A camry is not exactly a high performance vehicle.

You'd still crash if you drive when you're sleepy.

theres exits around me i wouldnt take at 65 in a supercar, much less in a crx lol.

Foot off brake and aim the wheel in the direction you want to go. Look in your local yellow pages for private defensive driving lessons. You don't have to go out with the teeny boppers. Also, falling asleep is the bigger issue here. Learning to recognize fatigue/lethargy and what to do about it before nodding off is at least as important as recovering from a bad maneuver.

Also, your user name is ironic in this thread.

find out where they do autox near you and go

this is actually a very good way to learn how to drive, the only downside is you do not get any high speed driving experiance this way as you will never get above second or third gear(depending on transmission/gear ratios) as there are to many corners an no straits to gain any speed.

Yeah, there's no help or lessons for falling asleep at the wheel.

There's also no excuse for taking exits way too fast for the thrill of it. Take it to the track. The rest of us don't want to play your games by association.

what kind of exit? I have both of said makes/cars:
99 camry as a dd
08 boxster as a fun car

MY RX8 could take it at 75. :sneaky:

wow...thats like basic driving knowledge....

master drive? if you have it there, has a skid pad they take you on to learn how to correct your steering. they also teach you common sense, like don't drive if you're sleepy.

you must've had too many hookers and blow....so you are forgiven.

They're called "defensive driving" schools if you're looking in the phone book. It's actually a law in a lot of places that you need to take these classes before you can drive. It's the law in much of Europe and most of Canada.
I've also heard the term "preventive driving"

but all I find online are defensive driving courses for 15 year olds...
That's because most people take these classes when they are 15 then take the test when they turn 16. There's nothing wrong with learning it now.

Option B is listen to ShawnD1. When my toyola had major problems with back end sliding out in corners, it put 300 pounds of sand in the trunk and it immediately stopped doing that. Yeah it probably fucked up the transmission but I never again slid while making a turn at unreasonably high speeds on icy roads.

OP, don't drive a boring car, you wont fall asleep.
I hear the Toyota Corolla XRS rides like it has no shocks. You feel every bump on the road. Nice and safe. Total opposite of family cars that lul you to sleep so you crash into the gas station and kill everyone.
Any "sport" car will do. Civic Si. Subaru WRX. Possibly a Corvette?

I have a corolla XRS, well had, the shocks weren't designed for comfort that is for damn sure, but they were amazing in the corners. Your ass hurt on country rounds, but that was about it. On the roads here in Denver it wasn't too terrible. It isn't as smooth as a lexus...but it corners better than a lexus.

did slowing down occur to you?

Why would I do something silly like that?
Remember that using your brakes and slowing down is what kills gas mileage. That's fuel you've already burned, so the most efficient thing to do is keep on rolling.

That's also why you should buy winter tires. Better gas mileage because you can drive 10x faster before losing control. With shitty tires, one needs to basically come to a complete stop before making a turn. With winter tires, you take that corner going 30mph without breaking a sweat.
