About gun ownership

I prefer revolvers for home defense. I have .38 spc and .357 mags.

I prefer a revolver over a semi-auto to avoid any risks of jams etc. I have a semi-auto and can clear jams and shoot simultaneously, yet still prefer my revolvers.

If you are concerned about over-penetration there is ammo available to reduce that risk.

My house is fairly small, with small rooms so I feel the area is just to 'tight' for a shotgun. I suppose if I lived in a house with huge rooms a shotgun might be a good choice. If so, I think I'd go with a 20 gauge. IMO, a 12 gauge is overkill etc.

America has these things called home invasions, and they can be particularly brutal, and are usually perpetrated by multiple attackers, and they aren't taking place in bad neighborhoods either. Nice houses, in good neighborhoods are the primary target, I mean why would a criminal rob broke people? The attacks are usually extremely violent in nature, the one that occurred in our old apartment complex left a 15 year old boy shot in the stomach, his mother assaulted, and their house robbed, this happened at noon in a big complex. The kind of criminal here that fits your description is some high school kids out being unruly, not real criminals.

I know most people swear by their semi-auto's, and many prefer the extra capacity of semi's. But I just don't want to have to worry about "Murphy's Law' striking at the wrong time. And, IMO, in the home defense environment something is seriously wrong if I've got to fire more than 1 or 2 rounds.

Yes, bad people exist... While that sort of thing is exceedingly uncommon here it still doesn't make a gun a requirement.

I'm sure the criminals in Canada suck compared to the super crooks you guys have but that is besides the point.. There are people advocating shoot first, its my damn house.. I'm sure the criminals are different in other places but if folks here had that mentality we'd have 9 drunk teenagers dead for every one "criminal." All I was saying was that to shoot without thought is retarded.. and in many places criminal in and of itself.

I'll be getting my wife a revolver for her side and probably another to place on the first floor (other floors are good). Oh, and you need to practice your two to the heart, one to the head routines. That takes 3 bullets. 😀

Most times it's more than one bad guy so I do like the extra ammo capacity of a semi. I have another magazine or two loaded by the gun just in case.

I feel safe because I understand statistics. It is not worth worrying about things will likely never happen to me and even if someone did break in only another rare fraction would be a situation I could not handle.. If it really came down to it as a last resort I could run away.. or I could die trying.. but that would be the same in some situations regardless of the weapons I possess.

There is NO state where it's illegal to kill to defend yourself. It's only a question of what has to happen first: was retreat a safe option, did you honestly believe you were in imminent danger of serious bodily harm, etc. For instance, if you're at home and someone comes at you in the night with a weapon while your family is asleep, there isn't a single state in the country where you would go to jail for killing them (no matter what you used to do it), as long as it was an immediate death (ie no hitting them after they were down, hitting em while they retreated, etc).

No I'm not a Texan, but if someone comes into my home and tries to rob me they are going to die period. If someone tries to rob my neighbor and I catch them, odds are they will probably die. The problem isn't people shooting criminals who illegally come into their home and try to rob them, the problem is people who illegally come into someone elses home with the intent to rob them.

The XD is SOLID. My brother gave me his when he picked up a USP compact .40 off one of his marine buddies, I totally came up because while I love the USP a .40 sucks and I'd take the XD .45 over it every day.

I've only shot it once, but you don't see it all that often is 10mm. This guy I used to work with had a Glock 20 and that thing was pretty sweet.

10mm is a sick round. Equivalent to a .41 magnum.

Short barrel shotgun loaded with birdshot is a good choice for home defense i.e. 1 shot takedown, some allowance for poor aiming depending on distance, small chance of deadly penetration through outside walls, also a pump has the advantage of a sound like no other when cycled and may lead to a rapid exit of an intruder without shots fired.

All this. Add a cheap laser sight as well, and if the sight of a 12 gauge, the sound of the action as you rack in a shell, and the little red dot don't result in an immediate high-speed departure, shoot to kill because you're facing a very stoned and/or very dangerous intruder. A shorty pump with an extended magazine allows you to keep several shells loaded without the danger of accidental discharge as well as furnishing that lovely, bone-chilling sound of the action. Remember some things though:
Loaded guns are very dangerous around children.
Guns have to be almost instantly usable for effective home defense.
Never point at anything you're not willing to shoot.
A loaded weapon you're not willing to use is merely arming your intruder.
And even birdshot at close range will penetrate sheetrock and siding (maybe not brick or block, though I've seen it happen) just like a slug. Keep that in mind if you have to shoot. A friend had loaded a shotgun and forgotten to unload it; it later got knocked over and blew a fist-sized hole through the brick exterior.

My personal preference for shotguns is 7-1/2 or even 9 shot, which is more easily stopped and loses energy more quickly than larger shot and so is less dangerous to the neighbors. You can also get rat shot for handguns, but they typically have much less power than shotguns so fast-expanding, light JHP are probably a better bet.

Shotgun is the best weapon for home defense, however it is also the hardest to contain safely if you have children/nosy people in your home.

No quick safes for shotguns that I'm aware of

All u gotta do is pump the action and your enemies will piss their pants if they know what's good for them.

On the pistol end, get some good home defense ammo (I use GLASER rounds, which some people will think im crazy, but I don't want to hit my children through the wall)
