i m personally a taiwanese... and i was suppose to feel happy for china since they are the third nation sending their astronaut to the outer space....
for some reasons.. .i think its pathetic..... cause the US sent someone to Moon on 1969, and China sent the first guy to orbit the earth 18 times and return to the earth immediately after lkike 20 something hours....
in my opinion, it did not symbolize anything except the fact that chinese technology is more than 35-55 years behind the US technnology~~~~

Am i doing the calculation right? or i should not look at this event that way?!?!?!

And how many other countries have a sent a man into space?
It's a big accomplishment. Hardly earth shattering, but if I were Chinese, I'd be proud.

I wouldn't look it things that way. I'd say they just had more important priorities. Like running over defenseless students for example. Some things just take priority.

Any manned spaceflight is an achievement to be proud of. So what if they're 30 years behind, atleast they're getting men up there. Personally, I think its pretty exciting.

yep yep.. thanx for those valuable comments.. however.. i was just wondering if Chinese government can work with NASA about the mission to Mars... instead of sending one man to orbit the earth... hehe.. its much significant that way...
just a thought...

Isn't "space race" a bit of a misnomer at this point? No race lasts for 30 years after the winner has been determined.

Not to mention that their rocket is a modified version of the Soyuz, which is actually a modified version of the Vostok, which took Gagarin into space more than 40 years ago. Which is a great testament to Korolev, the original designer. The Soyuz is like the B52. Great design that stays current for decades.
More info on R-7 (circa 1950) rocket derivatives.

The problem is whether or not there is enough trust between Washington and Beijing to cooperate in space. The issue of technology transfer is still very one sided unlike with the Russians where they were only a few "steps" behind us (I believe the problems the Russians are having is not because of the lack of technology but the lack of funding). Do we want to work with them and risk helping their own development of space based weapons?

I persnoally thought it was funny... But I also agree it is a somewhat big deal. Of course kinda like winning the gold medal in the special olympics. No matter what, still better not being retarded. But hey, you gotta start somewhere, might as well be sending someon in orbit. I would say just start stacking those little guys up! Reach the stratosphere in no time!

It is a huge deal because while we have launched into space 40 years earlier, and have gone to the moon, we sort of retreated into a position where it's easy for the Chinese to catch up.

and return to the earth immediately after like 20 something hours....

israeli's first astronaut last year burnt up in the atmosphere :(
the shorter the mission, the less likely things can go wrong, china probably didn't have modules for extensive life support and food functions, hences only 20 hrs

the race is not over. i'm sure the red country would like to take the red planet.

i heard some news report.... if i remember correctly... it's from this news agency Chinatimes that China wants to establish a base on the moon and claim that the moon is theirs... lol... that would just be funny if US and China are fighting for the moon... every one wants a piece of pie...

Meh, maybe it will start another space race. I'd love to see China land on the moon, or send probes into space.

As long as they share the data.

Who cares if they're 30 years behind? They're actually DOING it! The US put a man on the moon... big deal!! Not in MY lifetime they haven't, that's all I care about! I say more power to anyone with the foresight to actually get the human race off this rock.

-- Jack

Cutting the space budget really restores my faith in humanity. It eliminates dreams, goals, and ideals and lets us get straight to the business of hate, debauchery, and self-annihilation.

Sending astronauts into space isn't a top priority for Taiwan, but they have sent quite a few communications satellites into space, and quite a few independent companies bid yearly for government contracts to send more stuff into space. But of course, in order to get prestige, you have to send a human being.
