JEWS INN-CENSED
NY POST/By KENNETH LOVETT

ALBANY - An Orthodox Jewish family from Brooklyn says they were humiliated when
they were forced out of an upstate Days Inn motel, where a desk clerk told
them, "You belong in a different hotel where your kind stay." Devorah Streicher
claims her family's nightmare began after they complained of seeing a rat in
the hallway of the Days Inn in the town of Catskill and were told by a motel
clerk, "That's the whole problem with you guys - you don't belong here. You
belong in a different hotel where your kind stay."
Streicher, her husband, Rafael, and three of their children had checked into
the motel in the rural town on a recent Friday in anticipation of visiting
their son at camp.
Things started going downhill after the family complained about the rat, said
Devorah Streicher, 34, who runs an Internet site with her husband.
Shortly afterward, the couple says, motel manager Mathai George showed up at
their room, claiming that the clerk who checked them in had undercharged them.
Although it was the Jewish Sabbath, meaning the Streichers couldn't do any
business transactions, George demanded they pay the difference in cash
immediately.
When the Streichers asked if the matter could be resolved later, George said no
and called the State Police, who told the family to go.
The family members, who couldn't drive on the holy day, found themselves
walking behind their car in 95-degree heat as a Days Inn employee drove it to a
hotel 15 minutes up the road.
Devorah Streicher said she and her family ended up sitting outside for hours,
until sundown.
"We were humiliated," she said. "People were watching while we walked on the
highway . . . following our car. It didn't seem real."
George defended his actions in the incident, saying he asked the Streichers to
leave the Days Inn not because they are Jewish, but because they were making a
scene after complaints that their kids were making noise in the room. He said
the hotel routinely caters to Orthodox Jews.
"People in the restaurant were watching him [Rafael Streicher] yell in the
lobby and saying, 'Kill this Jew, bomb him,' " George said. "They had a Lexus,
and I didn't want to see it damaged. We have Muslim workers from Arabia who all
got mad."
With help from Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), the Streichers say they
plan to sue the Catskill Days Inn, as well as the hotel corporation for
civil-rights violations
---------------------------------------
Apperantly, according to former employees, this place was home to many racist incidents, with the racism directed towards both Jews and blacks. I heard the people who were the victims in this case on a radio show today, and it is a truly sad story. To have little kids thrown out of their room and made a mockery of, is a heinous act indeed. No wonder this particular Days in gets 0 stars out of 5 on the Days inn site.
