JEWS INN-CENSED
NY POST/By KENNETH LOVETT
---------------------------------
ALBANY - An Orthodox Jewish family from Brooklyn says they were humiliated when
they were forced out of an upstate Days Inn motel, where a desk clerk told
them, "You belong in a different hotel where your kind stay." Devorah Streicher
claims her family's nightmare began after they complained of seeing a rat in
the hallway of the Days Inn in the town of Catskill and were told by a motel
clerk, "That's the whole problem with you guys - you don't belong here. You
belong in a different hotel where your kind stay."

Streicher, her husband, Rafael, and three of their children had checked into
the motel in the rural town on a recent Friday in anticipation of visiting
their son at camp.

Things started going downhill after the family complained about the rat, said
Devorah Streicher, 34, who runs an Internet site with her husband.

Shortly afterward, the couple says, motel manager Mathai George showed up at
their room, claiming that the clerk who checked them in had undercharged them.

Although it was the Jewish Sabbath, meaning the Streichers couldn't do any
business transactions, George demanded they pay the difference in cash
immediately.

When the Streichers asked if the matter could be resolved later, George said no
and called the State Police, who told the family to go.

The family members, who couldn't drive on the holy day, found themselves
walking behind their car in 95-degree heat as a Days Inn employee drove it to a
hotel 15 minutes up the road.

Devorah Streicher said she and her family ended up sitting outside for hours,
until sundown.

"We were humiliated," she said. "People were watching while we walked on the
highway . . . following our car. It didn't seem real."

George defended his actions in the incident, saying he asked the Streichers to
leave the Days Inn not because they are Jewish, but because they were making a
scene after complaints that their kids were making noise in the room. He said
the hotel routinely caters to Orthodox Jews.

"People in the restaurant were watching him [Rafael Streicher] yell in the
lobby and saying, 'Kill this Jew, bomb him,' " George said. "They had a Lexus,
and I didn't want to see it damaged. We have Muslim workers from Arabia who all
got mad."

With help from Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), the Streichers say they
plan to sue the Catskill Days Inn, as well as the hotel corporation for
civil-rights violations

---------------------------------------

Apperantly, according to former employees, this place was home to many racist incidents, with the racism directed towards both Jews and blacks. I heard the people who were the victims in this case on a radio show today, and it is a truly sad story. To have little kids thrown out of their room and made a mockery of, is a heinous act indeed. No wonder this particular Days in gets 0 stars out of 5 on the Days inn site.

Not driving on the sabbath is part of Orthodox Judiasm. To them, i guess it wasnt a choice.

not only that, but this article leaves out a great many of the details. Essentially, since they couldn't unplug things b/c of Shabbos, they had employees throwing their stuff around into their luggage while much of the hotel was watching. They endured a great deal of suffering just because they had a certain belief set. These people were very tolerant, they put up with a lot of garbage going on around them at the hotel (like loud singing at 2AM, and many beer bottles by their door in the morning) the hotel people tried to charge them obscene ammounts for a room on several occasions (199 and 250 dollars for a room at a DAYS INN!!!!!!!!!) their number is listed online, and I already heard they are being swamped with complaints for their many racist incidents, and this one in particular.

um, someone called that number and recounted their conversation on radio it was, essentially "We had nothing to do with it, the state trooper forced them out, we love Hebrews, hee haw!"

and that story is verified, the people involved were on a NY talk radio show recounting their ordeal so I would say the Post is pretty trustworthy.

Well, you choose your religion. So therefore you must follow the rules. There's always going the atheist way.

heh heh:)

post a transcript, ok? ;)

The call I made tonight was bit of a teaser, I plan on making a longer one tonight. I didn't wait for a response because I did not want to lose a couple of IQ points: " I am sorry that you felt the need to eject a kind family because they committed the two unpardonable sins of chastising you0 for having a hotel inhabited by a very large rat, and the sin of wearing a yarmulkle. I am sure you do not need the business of "my kind" of people who account for a third of Catskill hotel revenue, as people are dying to pay $100 a night for your luxurious 0-star motel. Yours is truly a classic case of shooting yourself in the foot, and from the looks of things, aiming the rifle at your head would have proved less damaging."

That is pretty much word for word best as I can remember it.

The Post is hardly trustworthy, but I do understand you feel the need to defend your religon. I just don't think the person answering the phone at that hotel sets the policy for that place. You know better than that.

are you saying these people somehow brought this kind of public humiliation and massive inconvenience upon themselves. Heaven forbid they have actual beliefs, unlike you. Can't you just be tolerant of others and not attempt to rationalize this, as acts of racism almost never should.

Of course I no better, but as this is probably a big deal there, that statement the employee made was probably prepared by that same manager who kicked them out for having a beard and kippah and I would think they relay the comments back to the higher ups.

I am no way racist man. I grew up with the most diverse kids I have ever seen in my life. All I'm saying if that's they religion they want to follow, that's fine by me. But don't go complaining to others about the rules you have to follow.

I think you are reading too much into a situation that was probably overblown and hyped up. Every time a jewish person, black, hispanic, white, or indian person is harassed or wronged doesn't constitute racism. I think you are looking for a vast conspiracy against jewish people. There isn't one. Don't be so hypersensitive to stuff you read in the Post(tabloid) or hear on a radio show(hardly an unbiased or regulated source).

Remember there is always two sides to a story.

Actually it's not racism, and he has beliefs. I understand you're upset though. If anyone did that to my kind (whatever that may be) I'd sure try to raise hell about it.

I understand the point you are trying to make, I just don't buy it. It seems like you are saying that you feel these should have been bullied by racists into doing what they believe to be a grave sin. That they are somehow not at fault for not conforming, or because they choose to be different, they have no right to be upset at being made a mockery of by gap-toother Catskill Hillbillies, who hit each other with pool cues and watch the "Wheel" for entertainment.

And that kind of discrimination you displayed is any better? Right. Someone needs to read up on what a hypocrite is. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt until you posted that drivel. Grow up.

Edited for my lack of spelling at 4 AM.

I do not believe there is any conspircy against Jews. What I do believe is that racism should be stamped out, and as a Jew I am obviously going to fight the hardest to stamp out anti-semetism, and this is a prime case. I want to bring this up so that people know. Maybe they will decide to make a call, or maybe they will decide not to go to this hotel, or not to visit Days Inn all together until this Hotel is under new ownership. And there is just one side to this story. A hotel doesn't get a zero star rating for no reason, especially when said rating was relative to other Days Inn's. Also, according to former employees of this hotel, Jews and blacks were commonly descriminted against, these people were just the first brave enough to make it a real issue.

That was tounge-in-cheek humor, I should probably edit in a rolling eyes. I have spent many a vacation in the Catskill and the vast majority of the people there are to use a common expression "good folk."

discrimination is someone shooting you a dirty look, or judging you to himself or in a private situation like an interview. This was public humilitaion. Made to walk along the highway in shabbos garb on a hot day to a hotel where the motel people had supposedly made a reservation (they hadnn't.) Public humiliation to be thrown out of your hotel room and yelled at by a uniformed trooper while many were looking on. I can deal with discrimination, but humiliation is terrible. It was likely even more terrible to these Orthodox Jews as they may hold the Talmud credo "One who truly embarasses someone, it is as if he has killed that person." Jews also belief that this type of embarresment caused the destruction of the 2nd Temple.

Just trying to give some background as to why this transcends, simple discrimination.

Since this is America, I have no doubt that they have a right to seek remedy through litigation. And if enough of a hassle is made, Days Inn can cancel their licensing right to the owner of that hotel. Problems do have solutions without having to respond with a grass-roots mob effort.
Well, you choose your religion. So therefore you must follow the rules. There's always going the atheist way.
As an athiest, I'm disturbed by that comment. In the community I live in, athiesm is much more disliked than the Jewish faith. But, while bothered, I believe there is a rulling that said complications brought from religious code could not be blamed on the alleged wrongdoer, unless he conclude the results of his unlawful actions.. Drunk driver hit Jehovah's Witness, and would have had life saved if she didn't refuse blood transfusion. Court ruled manslaughter, not murder. (not a lawyer)
as a Jew I am obviously going to fight the hardest to stamp out anti-semetism, and this is a prime case.
I find it quite interesting people claim discrimination against a demographic. This incident is of a personal nature, at least from the manager's eyes, with a preconceived stereotype aggravating the situation.

In any case, housing in incredibly regulated, and I'm sure that there are laws on the books that will shut him down but good.
