No clue about skinny Robotnik. I'm assuming his name Eggman came from his round shape too. Maybe they should have gotten Mike Myers to play Fat Bastard to play Robotnik.

I'm guessing it's an origin story? ...and also an origin of how that dude got really fat? dunno, I have zero familiarity with that series. Never did the Sega stuff.
Unsurprisingly, the movie definitely seems aimed at kids. I guess that's kind of a knock, because I'd like to think some of the best kids' movies we get these days are good enough at putting in content that can appeal to adults too.

I don't profess to be a huge Sonic fan, but I did read the comics as a kid. At least from what I can recall, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik was always rotund. (His name and nickname came from arguments between SOA and SOJ arguing over what his name should be.) Most people probably got a lot of their "Sonic lore" from the Archie Comics series or the cartoon... and by that, I mean the good one. The comics and cartoon both included the Freedom Fighters (Bunny, Tails, Sally, Antoine, and ...I can't remember the Walrus), and involved Sonic fighting on Mobius in a version where Robotnik has pretty much already won -- hence being underground freedom fighters.
I'd kind of rather see something in the Archie/Sonic universe as it was a little darker than you'd probably expect.

something about the Genesis games in that era...their midi files always had that heavier bass sampling, you know? That sounds very much like Phantasy Star II of the time, Altered Beast...they definitely did something noticeably different with their sound than Nintendo was doing.
And I even recognized it then, I just didn't know how to explain it as a ~10 year-old. (my friend had one, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Phantasy Star for some reason...shit blew my mind at the time.)
I wonder how many of the reviews reflect old people that actually grew up with SEGA genesis era Sonic games vs. young kids that just see it as any other cartoon.

Loved Sonic as a kid, I was obsessed with beating the game gear version of sonic levels as fast as possible. I remember spending hours trying to beat the first level in less than 25 seconds. Sanic memes are great as well.
Apparently it's still doing pretty well financially, so they may not need our support. $113 million gross globally through Feb 16th? I wasn't expecting that from a Sonic movie.

I ended up seeing the Sonic movie last weekend, and I'll admit that I went in knowing that I wasn't going to care for Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Unsurprisingly, I was right in that regard. How about the rest of the movie? It was alright. I kind of missed sassy Sonic from the cartoon days. I do wish that they would've used a bit more of the Sonic lore. For example, the movie focuses heavily on the power of Sonic's ...well... "Speed Force", but it could have easily just been the chaos emeralds instead.
I'm fine with them leaving out other Sonic characters for now. Although, in the beginning, Sonic is being attacked by a group of masked bipedal... things. They never gave you an incredibly clear shot of them, but based on what I could see, they appeared to be Echidnas (like Knuckles). That actually would've worked with the chaos emeralds given that the Echidnas are charged with defending the emeralds, and if Sonic had them, they would also be searching him out.
Oh, and as for one knock on the movie, it has one thing I hate in kids' movies... random flatulence. Body humor can be amusing to some degree, but pretty much all good jokes need some sort of setup. Random farts usually have no setup, and are just a cheap, writer's hack to try to get a laugh out of kids.
If you're going to see the movie, there is a post-credits scene after the fancy credits that deals with a setup for a sequel.
Speaking of that, here's how I would've preferred to see it go down...
As noted earlier, I would include the chaos emeralds. I wouldn't change a ton with the exception of making it so the ring teleport only works with the power of a chaos emerald, and instead of losing his rings, Sonic loses the chaos emeralds. This also adds a little funny of Sonic trying to use the rings without the emeralds to only have it look super awkward.
The end wouldn't be terribly different either with the exception of Dr. Robotnik ending up with one of the emeralds instead of one of Sonic's quills and Sonic has the others. Sonic still gets blasted and knocked out, and during the scuffle between Tom and Dr. Robotnik, the chaos emerald gets knocked over toward Sonic. This causes the emeralds to activate and transform him into Super Sonic. Using the power of Super Sonic, Sonic is able to defeat Dr. Robotnik. He can even send him to the mushroom planet too.
The end-credit scene can pretty much stay the same, but Tails would be tracking the chaos emeralds; however, it would also include one other figure obscured by the shadows (Knuckles) that was also drawn to the Earth by the use of the emeralds. This would setup Knuckles as the potential (secondary?) villain of the second movie.
