We all know about Canada's inferiority complex, self described by prominent canadians below....

"I'm pleased to hear that Canadians are starting to break out of their 'little Canada' attitude and I have always been puzzled why some Canadians have an inferiority complex," she said.

It's a cultural inferiority complex that is not without its merits.

Why anti-Americanism is as Canadian as maple syrup

We Canadians have a serious inferiority complex

by W.T. Stanbury

Deputy Prime Minister John Manley put it this way:
"I think it is a sign of our insecurity, that sometimes we feel that we have a moral conviction that we are somehow or another superior [to the U.S.]" (National Post, Dec. 4, 2002). The weak gain a perverse satisfaction from verbal barbs directed at the strong. The strong are inhibited from administering a physical or economic response. The weak see these barbs as "free" ? they will not result in retaliation.

In stark outline, here is my theory of the bases of the wide streak of anti-Americanism among some Canadians. The root cause is those Canadians' appreciation of their weakness, a serious inferiority complex if you will. Feelings of weakness or inadequacy ? even if inchoate ? generate a sense of insecurity and even of fear. Insecurity and fear, in turn, generate hostility to the country against which Canada is so evidently weak ? the United States.

The sources of Canada's weakness are several. First, the U.S. has a population of 287 million to Canada's 31 million. Yet Canada's area is slightly greater than the U.S. More importantly, the real per capita GDP of the U.S. is over 20 per cent above that of Canada. This reality breeds resentment and even loathing by some Canadians.

The weakness of Canada is also partly due to its dependency on the U.S. in economic terms. Canada has long been dependent on the U.S. economy and this dependency has grown under the FTA and then, NAFTA. CanWest News Service (owner of the National Post) (Nov. 28, 2002) put it this way: In 1970, 65 per cent of Canada's exports went to the U.S.; today it is 87 per cent. That amounts to over 40 per cent of our GDP. "We trade more with the Americans than with each other," referring to inter-provincial trade. While Canada is the No. 1 export market for U.S. products and services, the relative dependency is highly asymmetric. We need them far more than they need us.

Second, the U.S. is now the only superpower and this fact alone is threatening to many Canadians. Such power is seen as immoral in itself and so its exercise is also immoral in the eyes of many of the critics of the U.S. Prime Minister Chrétien, for example, believes that the United Nations must play an important role in constraining the power of the U.S. Christie Blatchford (National Post, Feb. 14, 2003) quotes Prime Minister Chrétien in a speech in Chicago on Feb. 13, 2003: "The price of being the world's only superpower is that its motives are sometimes questioned by others. Great strength is not always perceived by others as benign. Not everyone around the world is prepared to take the word of the United States on faith." He clearly implied that Canada was one of those nations.

Being a superpower comes with many burdens and painful decisions. American taxpayers pay a big chunk of their taxes each year to support their military forces. For them, Canada is seen as a carping, free-rider benefiting greatly from the U.S. defence umbrella. Even Canada's role in peacekeeping has shrunken greatly. Jonah Goldberg, writing in the National Review in November, 2002, noted that, "Today, Canada ranks number 37 as a peacekeeping nation in terms of committed troops and resources, and it spends less than half the average of the skinflint defence budgets of NATO."

The third source of weakness lies in the easy acceptance/strong desire for U.S.-made products of pop culture by Canadians. For example, U.S.-made shows account for over 70 per cent the TV viewing of English-Canadians; American movies account for over 95 per cent of box office receipts in Canada. The export of U.S. cultural products is seen by Canadian cultural nationalists as a form of "cultural imperialism."

Fourth, the feelings of inferiority and insecurity that prompt expressions of anti-Americanism stem in part from a terribly weak sense of national identity among English Canadians.

Is their vastly more violent culture the end result of this complex, or just a contributing mitigating factor?

Source: Statistics Canada, CANSIM II, table

Canada
rate per 100,000 population
Crimes of violence 994.5

The overall violent crime rate reached a 21-year low -- 525 murders, rapes, robberies and assaults for every 100,000 residents.

yes, are you?

But you are right, we are the greatest, maybe we should have sold our souls for a few bucks like the Germans, and tossed in some new conventional weapons as they also did.

don't start with the "Heil" crap again, we had enough of the "greatness" of the German people already......

It is well documented through the International Crime Victimization Surveys (ICVS) and other international crime statistics that several other countries popularly perceived and advertised as "safe", vis-a-vis those 'blood-thirsty violent Americans', are often more violent than the US when you account for more types of violent criminal offenses than murder (rape, robbery, mugging, carjacked, burgled, etc.).

These are prevalent crimes which can and do happen to anyone and are perpetrated by predatory criminals who look for easy victims.

Whereas murder in the US is overwhelmingly associated with criminal activity; i.e. your chances of being murdered in a gang-related or drug-related shooting are slim provided that you aren't a gang member, drug addict, or street dealer and don't associate with these types. The majority of murder victims have criminal records and were murdered relative to their criminal associations, activities, or lifestyle.

So in the US one can dramatically reduce their chances of being a murder victim if they just avoid certain things like joining a street gang, dealing drugs, selling stolen items to a fence, etc.

In countries like England, you cannot significantly reduce your chances of being raped, mugged, robbed, or burgled unless you simply don't leave the house or you move. I think it was Elizabeth Taylor who recently stated she was moving to the US from London because delinquent youths are simply out of control, mugging people with impunity because they know the penalties are a joke.

Its gotta be pretty bad when even the super wealthy don't feel safe.

Tell me how great America was to my native american ancestors. Please justify what they did. I dont care about Canada. You are bragging on the US, by belittling everyone else. Justify successful genocide. Casinos? Dont even go there. Americans took what was their world, and tossed them a bone. All of that is done, and I rarely think on it except when I see those who build their country up by tearing others down. Our history hardly allows us to toss too many stones.

The murder rate in the US is 5.7 and in Canada is 1.8. Alistar7 can't even do simple math. Must be because of the "Arabic" numbers.

Look at the link I posted above, the violent crime rate in the U.S. is more than twice that of the Canada.

According to the statistics the violent crime rate in the U.S. is 24.7 per 1,000 people, or 2470 per 100,000 people, a lot more than the ~1000 per 100,000 in Canada. This is 2001 data from the Department of Justice, I'm not sure if agree with the collection method, but all the data is there.

The whole premise of this thread is flawed....

Oh man! Never tell a guy with an inferiority complex that he has an inferiority complex; it drives him into a hyper-defensive rage replete with spastic justiculations of blind anger fueled by frustration and fear at having his insecurity exposed which, thereby, redoubles the inferiority complex which, ultimatly, manifests itself tenfold in the form of vitriolic assertions to the contrary.

Not unless you are able to say with certainly what crimes are encompassed under the heading "violent crimes" in both countries.

Actually, when you know what the hell you're doing, its not.

The Bureau of Justice National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), to which you have linked, attempts to estimate both reported and unreported violent crimes, by interviewing approximately 80,000 Americans age 12 and older in 43,000 households twice each year about their victimizations from crime.

The Canadian Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) to which you've offered NCVS figures in comparison includes only crimes reported to the police through Canada's national incident based reporting system. As you may know, or maybe not, among the five categories of violent index crimes, it is estimated that approx. 50% go unreported to police.

So while the BJS NCVS figures are thought to be on the more liberal end of the estimated number of actual offenses committed, reported and unreported, the Canadian UCR series represents only those crimes reported to police, or roughly half of all violent crimes estimated to occur in Canada by the [rough] 50% rule of thumb.

In fact, the incident-based Canadian UCR is the Canadian equivalent of the incident-based FBI UCR. They are designed to be substantially comparable, unlike the Canadian UCR and BJS NCVS, which are really two entirely different statistical tools.

According to the more comparable FBI Uniform Crime Reports, in 2001 the total US violent crime rate was 504.4 violent crimes per 100,000. According to Canada's Uniform Crime Reports, in 2001 the total Canadian violent crime rate 994.5 crimes per 100,000, nearly twice the US rate.

This does underscore why one shouldn't leap to speak on matters about which they aren't informed enough to prevent themselves from stepping in it. There is more to statistics than gleening numbers from the internet.

This is particularly disturbing given what Welfare State Proponents describe as Canada's 'superior and more compassionate social welfare safety net' that we are incessantly told reduces crime, not to mention being constantly reminded by Welfare State Proponents how 'barbaric' we Americans are for our higher violent crime rates and 'lack of social welfare safety net'.

Hmm, things are not always as they appear, it would seem.

Give me a break. tcsenter seems to think he has a good explanation for everything.
You can't always baffle someone with bullshit.
Its funny you people can even PRETEND Canada is more violent than America.

I've lived in the biggest two cities in Canada, which are in the top 3 for the biggest in CANADA.
I'd feel safter in any of them than the safest city in the US.

Why would we pretend when reality is just as good?

Ah well, just as long as you aren't confusing your false 'perceptions' with factual reality, its all good.

Perceptions are like assholes, everybody has one. Some are more consistent with reality than others. Whatever makes you feel better.

HEHE. Have you seen that SouthPark episode with the native americans and their casinos? hahahah. I couldn't quit laughing. I grew up in Northern Minnesota. Right next to a slew of casinos and reservations. I grew up with native friends and classmates. Never was I prepared for the hatred I saw displayed by them towards whites. I don't hate natives. I was treated pretty poorly a time or two, not more than by whites I suppose. My dad is a jailer up there. Lots of pretty destructive practises going on up there. I hear that Oxy is the new hit drug of choice. Going for $40 for a twenty I think.

USA KICKS ASS!!!!

GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
