I didn't play many scary games as a child... I played shit like Zelda on NES and Power Rangers on Sega.

This wasn't 7th grade for me (more like 10th), but Doom 3 is still the only thing too scary to play for me. I can play far more scary games, but doom 3 just makes me scared shitless. The whole jump you from behind was :( Too bad, it looks badass full settings :(

7th Guest and 11th Hour.
Actually I think I was in Sr High when the first one came out.

Also Hell. Wait, I was in Sr High when that came out too.

Nope. Nothing had that kind of graphics and audio capability when I was in Junior High.

Though long after I graduated I played Alien Vs Predator 2 and that scared my FUCKING BALLS OFF!!!!!

Agreed. RE1 and 2 scared the shit out of me.. now with 4 it seems to be losing that all to good feeling... I probably wont remember 4,5,6,7 as much as the first 2-3. I wish they'd go back to the roots of the game - not what RE5 is doing and making an 'action oriented experience'... in my opinion, Resident Evil was much better as it originally was.

Never played Resident Evil until the GameCube version, and by that time I was old enough to be simply pissed off that I had wasted money on it rather than playing it and being scared (seriously, the game sucks ass).

FPSs always scared me though. Always. Wolfenstein, Doom, Pathways Into Darkness. Dark Forces didn't scare me so much because it was familiar to me (Star Wars stuff).

Try going back and playing RE1 or RE2. They're much less scary now.

It's kind of how Alfred Hitchcock movies are no longer really frightening to a modern audience. The longer a frightening work exists, the less scary it becomes (specifically because people have probably already seen it or a clone and know what to expect)

From the games being listed, a lot of you must either still consider yourself young or that you only became 'old' relatively recently. Heh.

Most games that I played when I was young were not horror or scary games at all. I believe Alone in the Dark was really the first game to scare the crap out of me. There may have been a few instances before that but most likely they were on accident. I think one of the King's Quest games had a haunted house/graveyard type area that I did not like at all.

Clive Barker's: Undying. I still haven't finished it to this day. I can't think of any other game that made me simply put it down and stop playing. AvP as the Marine comes close, but I finished that one. System Shock 2 was overall very creepy, but didn't really scare me.

sometimes put in a state of awe (seeing the Colossus and Sathanas for the first time in FS2, for example).

The Sathanas and Colossus battle was not quite as awe-inspiring as the entire FLEET of Shivan Juggernauts at the very end.

What game is that? What's FS2 stand for?

Freespace 2

Let me also say that FPS games for me, are far more capable of being scary vs a 3rd person shooter or survival horror (RE-style) game. Those games can startle me and definitely make me jump, but nothing SCARES me like a FPS, because it really feels like I'M there.

I forgot to mention Condemned, which somebody linked to. Very creepy and spooky, but I didn't enjoy the gameplay so I never finished it.

Dragon Warrior I - Dungeon music + watching older cousin play in the dark + being 6 years old + green dragon popping up and loud sound effect = scared of DW1 for many years

Ninja Gaiden I - Creepy (but revolutionary) cut scenes and scary music in level 4 = didn't get past level 4 for years

These were totally irrational fears but those two games and their music gave me chills for many years.

Oh heck, yeah... Played this in like 5th grade on my IIc. Those stupid Nazis asking you for your papers and then shooting at you while yelling something that sounded like "Allspice". :) Freaked me out. Had to be the original game that really scared me.

SH. Though I might of been in HS at the time.

Final Doom more likely in JR high. Nothing like mutilated human bodies for decorations.
