Resident Evil

I must have been 8 or so at the time...damn zombies crawling through windows and those DOGS!!!

QFT!

we used to play it in the dark with the TV turned up, and those zombies busting through the glass and walls nearly ended us!

Yeah, I don't think I've ever been as freaked out by a game as the first couple hours of RE.

Don't judge me.

haha, I'm playing thru Zelda 2 on the VC now and just the other day those things came running at me and I was thinking "man, those are creepy"

the original System Shock is the only game I can think of that scared me at a deeper level then 'suddenly appear for startling effect' scared.

Clive Barker's: Undying. I still haven't finished it to this day. I can't think of any other game that made me simply put it down and stop playing. AvP as the Marine comes close, but I finished that one. System Shock 2 was overall very creepy, but didn't really scare me.

sometimes put in a state of awe (seeing the Colossus and Sathanas for the first time in FS2, for example).

The Sathanas and Colossus battle was not quite as awe-inspiring as the entire FLEET of Shivan Juggernauts at the very end.

DOOM scared me just watching someone else play! The creepy screams were enough for me to nearly soil myself when playing in the dark!

Geez, okay time to bust out the old skool because you did say when we were kids right?

So, the very first game that scared me as a kid was Aliens for my Comodore 64. A few levels basically scared me crapless. There was one level in particular. You are commanding between 6 marines that drop down into a sewer maze at random spots. In this level you have to find Newt and get out of the maze with at least one marine before getting swarmed by aliens. Man this level got my heart racing so bad I could hardly beat it.

Why? the music, the alien sounds, the fact that you can only control one marine at a time, but got a heart meter giving a heart thumping sound as each marine got more and more scared the more alien "blips" that started showing up on his or her motion tracker. Add in the fact that once the aliens start swarming a marine, there is no hope, that marine is dead. In that game, the aliens kicked your butt big time.

Seriously tough and scary game at the time. This was also right after the movie came out I believe.

Sure, I'll throw in another vote for AvP Marine. To this day I haven't played an FPS that produced the same level of thrilling suspense (FEAR is a fantastic game, but that's more straight up terror). As the Marine you're armed to the teeth, but so damned fragile... I loved how the motion sensor was simultaneously useful and terrifying.

Rescue of Fractalus.

Not only did you have to dodge enemy gun placements to rescue downed pilots. Occassionally the Fractalians would try to pretend they were your downed pilots. Scared the crap out of me when they jumped on the ship and tried to crack the windows.

Crazy action

Deus Ex
Some sections of HL2 + FarCry
Doom3
FEAR (really got in your head)

Splinter Cell, sometimes you find a guy and it just spooks you beyond belief

I was not really young for these. I think I played Deus Ex when I was 12-13

Resident Evil without a doubt.

The part where the dog smashed through the window in the hallway at the start of the game....

I had all the lights off, my parents were gone, and it was only me and my brother. I swear to god, we jumped like crazy. Good memories there.

Quake was kind of scary to me, more on the thought behind it././

Yup, I remember yelling "get the hell out of here!!!" when that happened.

I had NO idea this was a Lucasarts game!

Bonic Command NES:

The final boss is Hitler, when you kill it shows a portrait of his face exploding. Grossed me out as a kid, plus i was nervous that my parents would see me playing a game with the word damn in it.

RE2 when i was older just for the "BOO!" factor, DooM3 for the same.

Silent Hill was the one game that truly creeped me out.

7th Guest creeped me out .. it wasn't scary in the jump-out-of-your-skin sense, but it damn sure gave me the willies every time I played it with all the lights turned out :) And that wasn't in jr. high, I was in my 20's when I played that :)

I played through and greatly enjoyed the other two campaigns in AvP, but Marine freaked me out more than anything before or since in a game.

It was masterful how the various sight and detection tools added to the intensity. You would constantly monitor the motion tracker, need to judge where to throw the flares in order to see incoming bugs as early as possible (you could only have a few flares burning at a given time). Finally, you had the choice to switch to night vision, but it was blurry and it also disabled your motion tracker. As light would mess it up, you pretty much had to shoot out the ceiling lights if you intended to use NV. Not having those lights was real trouble if you then switched back to motion tracker/flares.

Didn't end up playing beyond three missions or so. This was before patches enabled saving in the middle of a mission. I know it's current conventional game design wisdom to allow unlimited saves, but IMO it does not fit every game and it did not fit AvP at all. Horror games tend to have that property.

I agree with underwater stuff, anything like that makes me hesitant to keep playing further lol like you would find in half life and the star wars games. Fighting in the dark is also pretty scary like in Doom3 that guy with the tail whipping arm who charges at you real fast made my heart pump alot the first time i had to encounter that.

One thing i can say about games that scare is that i dont play it through as fast as a game that doesnt have that effect. Does it take you guys longer to finish a game that scares as oppose to no scare?
