"A Few Good Men" quote really hits home for me

Remember in the movie, "A Few Good Men", when Jack is going off in the courtroom. To me this quote really hits home and is one that all you anti-war protestors should ponder over before you go out and plug up traffic this weekend.

"You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. "

God bless the USA

A quote thread, my contribution.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

And if I am not as strong as you or can't run as fast while I try my best to stand at your side on that wall you may order a code red and have me beat up or if things get out of control I may get killed... Yes! the motivation of the movie is great... so is "the day the earth stood still"

Interesting. To me, that quote aptly summarizes Col. Jessep's arrogance and contempt for the rule of law.

Indeed. Apparently he should not have been questioned regarding the illegal abuse he put his troops through.

And the director would have said "Cut... Tom... what happened to the script..???"
And what about Col. Gadaffi (Sp) he had no contempt for his troops after he off'ed the ones he didn't like.

Hollywood made a good movie didn't they. Considering the number of actors that seem to be far left of the rest of the US the message of that movie is not surprising.

Nearly all men can withstand adversity; If you want to test a man's character, give him power.
- Abraham Lincoln

Violence is the first refuge of the incompetent.
- Issac Asimov

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?
- Gandhi

The pioneers of a warless world are the youth that refuse military service.
- Albert Einstein

Naturally, the common people don't want war ... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.
- Hermann Goering

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor; for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind.

And when the drums of war reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has 'closed', the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all their rights unto the leader and gladly so.

How do I know? For this is what I have done. AND I AM CAESAR.

That quote is retarded. If he said that back in the draft days, then maybe I would've agreed. Now people join the military because they want to. It's their choice, I didn't force them too. Plus I am doing my part by paying my taxes.

So my answer is hell no, I don't have to say thanks to you.

RadMan,

Thanks for the quotes! Those are so perfect for this situation. Maybe you could post these in a new thread so that all the war-supporters could be sure to see them? Give them something to think about.

I don't know, last time my comments were taken out of context you should have seen the backlash (er. 9/11)

I'll see.

Next you'll be telling us the US spent billions of dollars making a hi-tech pen to use in space while the Russians simply used a pencil. ;)

Ah, I love rumors.

Thanks? I'd tell him to fsck right off.

Probably b/c you guys have no respect for those who fight and die for our freedom. I realize our freedom is not in direct attack right now but the whole point is there are guys who risk their lives, and then there are fscking pussies that complain about they way they handle their business. So next time there is a war, we'll let protestors and whinners fight the war and see how we come out.

This is just like the threads people had after 9/11, that we should thank our policemen and firefighters for their sacrifices. People started coming in and saying "I don't have to thank them for that, it's their job, I pay them with my taxes". Those arguments went nowhere fast, and these won't go anywhere either. Let's not go down that road, shall we?

Thanks etech for the heads up. I was wondering about that one.

"Probably b/c you guys have no respect for those who fight and die for our freedom. I have every respect for those who fight and die for truly just and righteous causes, and only after ALL peaceful attempts to resolution have been exhausted. The "West" is responsible for this problem and that means that the "Western" population may have to suffer some misery or even death to spare the truly innocent Iraqi people. True courage means taking responsibility for one's or one's government's actions. It is all too easy to send troops abroad to kill people without feeling the consequences of those actions.

The West's idea of FREEDOM has all too often trampled on the rights of the innocent around the world. It would take too long to build evidence here and now but I think it suffices to say that the world seems to be getting that, and that is why one sees so much opposition.

Not because they are "fscking pussies" and "whinners". Besides, I'm not entirely convinced that many armies around the world fight for freedom as much as what they are lead to believe is freedom. They are often 2 very different things.

My socialist 2 cents.

Our soldiers were not involved in the peaceful attempts to stop conflict. Therefore, whether we respect their orders or not, the military deserves our respect for the very job that they perform, selfless as it is.

I think maybe you missed something in the movie the quote comes from. Maybe even the entire plot?
Do actually think the guy the quote came from was in the right?

Our servicemen have my respect, the problem is the people in charge of them right now.

Sorry, you are not the troops, so don't think for them please!
