A 22 year old dishwasher, a mother's birthday, and a father

We are putting in new flooring today(DIY laminate) and we have a dishwasher that is 22 years old that would my mom would like to have replaced with some $380 one for her birthday. The money for the dishwasher has come directly from my mothers mom(my grandmother) specifically for either a new dishwasher or stove.

However the problem is that my father has repeatedly said we will not be buying one because the one we have now works.

Who is being irrational?

edit: he is just as adamant about not getting a new stove as it works fine.

They are both 22 years old. The dishwasher we have now has leaked before so she figured it would be best to get a new dishwasher to prevent a leak on the new flooring.

Its a tough call.
Newer washers are generally more efficient both in terms of power and water usage, as well as potentially much quieter.
My washer runs like a top but I want to replace it for a quieter model.

That said, it *does* still run. I generally go with the "If it aint broke, dont fix it" theory but sometimes there are noticable advantages to upgrading something which doesnt necesarily need it.

Ah yes, she has used this. My father is the one who brings in 90% of the money, so he says, "well in that case, I'll take all my money that I make and only spend it on things I want, and you can take yours and spend it on what you want."

His argument is that the money saved (~$40 a year?) isnt worth the amount of a new dishwasher. "Businesses only make investments that see a return within 2-3 years."


I guess you could say my dad its very cheap.

I doubt the father has responsibility for washing the dishes. Therefore, the father does not appear to consider how a new dishwasher will assist the mother's daily workload. Since money has been provided for a new dishwasher or stove, it appears the father should accept the need to purchase a new kitchen appliance and either help or get out of the way.

I do not recommend a Maytag dishwasher since the one I purchased five years ago failed recently due to an engineer's decision during the design of the motor to use a spindle with decomposable materials rather than with stainless steel, appropriate electroplating, or a sufficient coating. The spindle rusted and broke apart, which required the motor to be replaced. The motor costs 80% of the price for a new dishwasher so I just purchased a new dishwasher instead from a different company.
