Having done this myself, it is a good idea to put the laminate under the stove and fridge. Some dishwashers are taller than others so if you floor up to the old dishwasher you may have to rip that laminate up to get it out when it breaks.

If I were you I would go to Sears and get both a new stove and a new dishwasher today. Home Depot is good too.

The money for the dishwasher has come directly from my mothers mom(my grandmother) specifically for either a new dishwasher or stove.

Everybody seems to be ignoring this. If your grandmother gave the money to your mom for a specific purpose, this has nothing to do with your dad whatsoever. If your grandmother gave you mom the money just for whatever, he might have more to say about it, but as it was, the dishwasher was the gift, not the cash.

A dishwasher or a stove was the gift. Besides that, I agree with you.

I do not recommend a Maytag dishwasher since the one I purchased five years ago failed recently due to an engineer's decision during the design of the motor to use a spindle with decomposable materials rather than with stainless steel, appropriate electroplating, or a sufficient coating. The spindle rusted and broke apart, which required the motor to be replaced. The motor costs 80% of the price for a new dishwasher so I just purchased a new dishwasher instead from a different company.

Are you an attorney?

No, I am not.

However, I have been working on a response to the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office) for a Pro Se patent application these last few weekends that has my mind all messed up and thinking in these terms.

My parents' dishwasher is 20 years old and it still works fine and looks fine.

But if the money was a gift to be used for a specific purpose, use it for that purpose - that's not for your father to decide.

Newer appliances are typically more efficient than old appliances, tell your dad you'll be saving money.

If you want to help your mom, the best thing for you to do is CALL GRANDMA. Tell her what's going on. She gave your mom a gift of a new appliance, if your mom is being prevented from accepting the gift, she should be made aware of it.

It's her money, she should pick. Get the DW.

Ah yes, she has used this. My father is the one who brings in 90% of the money, so he says, "well in that case, I'll take all my money that I make and only spend it on things I want, and you can take yours and spend it on what you want."

What's your dad getting back at your mom for?

so does he want the stove instead? or does he just not want your mom to get either?! if the latter I'll say he's being irrational and a control freak.

Laminate sounds like a bad idea for kitchen use. There's going to be water on that floor at some point in time. Either from the dishwasher (new or old), sink, refrigerator...

Grandma could simply give her the money to do with as she pleases. No reason to dictate that it be used for a large kitchen appliance. Why make waves?

Basically its because my mom has been wanting a new one for a couple of years now, and so my grandma thought that she would help her out by giving her $100 bucks for her birthday and the past two christmas'. On each card she would write "for a new dishwasher or stove!"

I basically told my dad how he shouldnt have a say in it because it was from her mom. He brought up the whole "fine, I'll take my money and blah blah blah." I said to grow up and then walked out of the room.
