I agree. Such obvious trolling should warrant a vacation.

But he brings up a valid point. Like it or not, Americans don't treat each other the same no matter how much we all wish it were that way.

I think it's a legitimate question, albeit one that sparks a lot of tension in some b/c they don't want to think that race/class plays a roll in society anymore.

Titanic was a big deal. Big ship, rich people. I recall reading somewhere about a steamboat down south in the 1800's that sunk in the Mississippi, killing over 1000 people.

Ah, here we go. The Sultana.

Link, about halfway down the page.

Sultana or Titanic, which one had multiple high-grossing movies made about it?

I don't think there'd have been such a big deal made about the attacks if it wasn't right into a big landmark.

Would we make as big of a deal of it?

Why/why not?

America wouldn't give a sh!t b/c the projects don't represent anything important regarding America or American society. The twin towers were a landmark, a symbol of prosperity and American pride.

That's not to say that the projects wouldn't be rebuilt. But it wouldn't be with a lot of fanfare or national news media attention whoring.

Projects are American leftovers...outcasts...unwanted...poor and needy...etc. Nobody wants to reflect on that.
Exactly.
Sad but true.

while i do not think it would be the outrage you see with the WTT i still think it would be huge. even if it hit the project it is still an atack on US soil.

It was certainly a valid discussion in the wake of the gov't responses to Katrina (would the response have been different in a more affluent area).

Terrorist attacks, especially large scale ones, are largely symbolic. The World Trade Center, Pentagon and Capitol were chosen as targets because they are prominent images of American capitalism, military and government, as you correctly mentioned. The original question has little to no merit because an attack on any residential complex (projects or not) would lack the scale and impact of a more prominent target.

IMHO, it's a class issue coupled with the symbolism of the towers. Anybody that thinks class doesn't play a role is fooling themselves.

Hate to get "off topic", but look at the crap that went on with the biggest disaster in aviation since 9/11at a Kentucky airport. Not only was it barely reported, the damn emmy's even had the fricken' dumb nuts to run an offensive scene on the day of the tradgedy.

So IMHO, it ain't about race. it's about class and the symbolism the towers represented.

What does the Kentucky airport crash have to do with class? The fact that it occurred in Kentucky?

Not from race or social status, but the towers were a symbol of everything that makes our country great. Projects are a symbol of what makes our country not great, no matter how harsh that seems.

Exactly. No one thinks about the projects and says "Beacon of American pride" or "American solidarity." They think crime, violence, drugs, poor folks, welfare moms, etc. Most Americans think that they won't help themselves so why should we help them?

On a somewhat related note...

- 13-year old black girl from the projects goes missing. What kind of media attention (if any) does she get?
- 13-year old white girl from middle-America goes missing. Stop the presses, [Nancy Grace] Breaking NEWWWWWWWWZZZ [/Nancy Grace]

BS. If black girl came from a family America could indetify with..eg. middle/upper middle class father is a doctor etc her name and story would be plastered just like the girl in aruba or that Ramsey girl. Remember when Jordan's father was wacked at a rest stop? 24/7 covereage.

How many white trailor trash girls you seen plastered on the news? None for the same reason as a projects black girl who goes missing, most americans feel no kinship or identity to that socioeconic class, no reason watch in both cases.

Remember: It's not that Bush doesn't care about black people.

Bush doesn't care about poor people. Being broke knows no creed.

yes, it's percieved as a low class/poverty sticken state (rightfully so)

Even though most people on that flight were white. My point is it isn't about race, it's about class.

Laugh but it's true in practice ...google Sudan genocide. Western world stands impotent as Blacks are being slaughtered in Sudan estimates are way wrose than Rawanda between 500K-1M so far these last 5 years. Much more important to go killing Iraqis for no good reason I guess.

1) Jordan was at the time the most prominent sports star IN THE WORLD. Of course it was going to be news.

2) Trailor trash white girls? In recent memory, Jessica lunsford.

This forum has already answered the question. You would get threads like this...

"the damn emmy's even had the fricken' dumb nuts to run an offensive scene on the day of the tradgedy. "

Oh get off it you loser.

Not only was it barely reported, the damn emmy's even had the fricken' dumb nuts to run an offensive scene on the day of the tradgedy.

Barely reported my ass. It plastered news outlets. It didn't have the longevity perhaps that most do because the cause of the crash was found immedietly. Arguably, it should have been a bigger story with more life because of the facts that have come out showing how unsafe the airport was and how the FAA ignored pilot's suggestions. But really, with plane crashes, once the cause is found out in this post-terrorist age, if it's pilot error it's got a much shorter news life than if it's a mechanical issue that could happen to any aircraft.

the same thing, they would just care less personally, but the politics of reelection would mandate that they go after the perps.

Well Bush would make a big deal about it because he needs new stuff to scare everybody with. It is all about the boogyman.

But the other people in the government who are not so pro war would not make a huge deal about it.

I don't think the nation would have made a big deal out of 9/11 if a bunch of poor black and hispanic people had died. Because it was NY and those buildings were full of rich white people it got all the headlines and outpouring as usual. Didn't you guys notice that when some white woman or girl is killed and/or kidnapped the media always makes a big deal out of it?
