Many blacks call Katrina "the 9/11 for black folk"

I never really understood that line of reasoning though.

Not from race or social status, but the towers were a symbol of everything that makes our country great. Projects are a symbol of what makes our country not great, no matter how harsh that seems.

Exactly. No one thinks about the projects and says "Beacon of American pride" or "American solidarity." They think crime, violence, drugs, poor folks, welfare moms, etc. Most Americans think that they won't help themselves so why should we help them?

On a somewhat related note...

- 13-year old black girl from the projects goes missing. What kind of media attention (if any) does she get?
- 13-year old white girl from middle-America goes missing. Stop the presses, [Nancy Grace] Breaking NEWWWWWWWWZZZ [/Nancy Grace]

BS. If black girl came from a family America could indetify with..eg. middle/upper middle class father is a doctor etc her name and story would be plastered just like the girl in aruba or that Ramsey girl. Remember when Jordan's father was wacked at a rest stop? 24/7 covereage.

How many white trailor trash girls you seen plastered on the news? None for the same reason as a projects black girl who goes missing, most americans feel no kinship or identity to that socioeconic class, no reason watch in both cases.
1) Jordan was at the time the most prominent sports star IN THE WORLD. Of course it was going to be news.

2) Trailor trash white girls? In recent memory, Jessica lunsford.

NFS I dunno what you're talking about. I watch the news and see crazy stuff that happens to kids in the PJ's all the time. I lieve in NY and just last week there was a story about some crazy idiot who put his baby brother out on top of an air conditioner 3 stories up. I've seen tons of kidnapping stories as well. Amber alerts are not just for white children, so quit deluding yourself.

Hate to get "off topic", but look at the crap that went on with the biggest disaster in aviation since 9/11at a Kentucky airport. Not only was it barely reported, the damn emmy's even had the fricken' dumb nuts to run an offensive scene on the day of the tradgedy.

So IMHO, it ain't about race. it's about class and the symbolism the towers represented.

Not the biggest by a longshot.

I think the lack of attention to the Kentucky crash may have been partly because it was a relatively small crash.

But yeah, I'm sure you're right that class had a part in it too. And the fact that nobody really likes Kentucky.

As some have said....most of the BS that goes on is not about black vs white. It's about poverty/lower class < all in most people's eyes. Even those that are living in poverty...the still think they are better than most people and that they 'never got the chance'.

It's situations when those people rise up, then they get attention. The same way someone in the upper class calls someone they know, who knows someone...that knows someone that can get the attention they want.

A lot that worked in the WTC were middle class or lower.

The argument is ignorant.

You must watch a lot of Fox news and MSNBC. Blech. Those networks are crapola. You're absolutely right. They will sensationalize a white girl going missing because it means better ratings. But why does a white girl missing get better ratings than a black girl? People watching those networks must be racists right? I don't know man. All I know is I can't stand watching them. I'd rather watch the BBC news on Public Television. Better reporting on actual world events, no sensationalistic bs, and much much more informative.

"they will sensationalize a white girl going missing because it means better ratings"

well all missing children news is sensationalized, generally. However, white kids, compared to overall population, go missing less often than black kids. There are far less rich people than poor people. There are far more missing children abducted by family members or who are runaways then are abcucted by strangers.

So when a rich white kid gets abducted by a stranger, it's news. It just doesn't happen that often.

Oh please people, you greatly underestimate the enemy. Bin Laden knew exacly how he wanted to package the attacks and how he wanted the world to see them. If there is a simple attack, as in the case of a large bomb, the visual impact is not as dramatic as the only thing seen is the aftermath which would be debris everywhere. The attacks were done in a way that they would unfold over time live in front of a viewing audience around the world. This way he was able to effectivley magnify and prolong the terror that was seen. It was also important that the attacks were during the day and when the weather was nice, etc. He used these methods to make as dramatic a statement as possible about how powerful he and his group were. If anything, he suceeded too well (although 1 of the 4 planes was crashed, missing the attack on a political symbol, leaving only economic and military symbols hit) and attracted more attention to himself then he was prepared to handle, thus placing in jeopardy the future of his mission.
