But he brings up a valid point. Like it or not, Americans don't treat each other the same no matter how much we all wish it were that way.
I think it's a legitimate question, albeit one that sparks a lot of tension in some b/c they don't want to think that race/class plays a roll in society anymore.

Titanic was a big deal. Big ship, rich people. I recall reading somewhere about a steamboat down south in the 1800's that sunk in the Mississippi, killing over 1000 people.

It was certainly a valid discussion in the wake of the gov't responses to Katrina (would the response have been different in a more affluent area).
Terrorist attacks, especially large scale ones, are largely symbolic. The World Trade Center, Pentagon and Capitol were chosen as targets because they are prominent images of American capitalism, military and government, as you correctly mentioned. The original question has little to no merit because an attack on any residential complex (projects or not) would lack the scale and impact of a more prominent target.
IMHO, it's a class issue coupled with the symbolism of the towers. Anybody that thinks class doesn't play a role is fooling themselves.
Hate to get "off topic", but look at the crap that went on with the biggest disaster in aviation since 9/11at a Kentucky airport. Not only was it barely reported, the damn emmy's even had the fricken' dumb nuts to run an offensive scene on the day of the tradgedy.
So IMHO, it ain't about race. it's about class and the symbolism the towers represented.
Human life is human life... regardless of their social status no one deserves to die in such a manner.

BS. If black girl came from a family America could indetify with..eg. middle/upper middle class father is a doctor etc her name and story would be plastered just like the girl in aruba or that Ramsey girl. Remember when Jordan's father was wacked at a rest stop? 24/7 covereage.
How many white trailor trash girls you seen plastered on the news? None for the same reason as a projects black girl who goes missing, most americans feel no kinship or identity to that socioeconic class, no reason watch in both cases.

Barely reported my ass. It plastered news outlets. It didn't have the longevity perhaps that most do because the cause of the crash was found immedietly. Arguably, it should have been a bigger story with more life because of the facts that have come out showing how unsafe the airport was and how the FAA ignored pilot's suggestions. But really, with plane crashes, once the cause is found out in this post-terrorist age, if it's pilot error it's got a much shorter news life than if it's a mechanical issue that could happen to any aircraft.

I don't think the nation would have made a big deal out of 9/11 if a bunch of poor black and hispanic people had died. Because it was NY and those buildings were full of rich white people it got all the headlines and outpouring as usual. Didn't you guys notice that when some white woman or girl is killed and/or kidnapped the media always makes a big deal out of it?
