8800GTX to be 30% faster than ATI's X1950XTX. GTS to be about equal to it.

I wouldnt be surprised if G80 will be only 30% faster. X1800XT was in a similiar boat with its initial release. The X1800XT was toe to toe with 7800GTX, but after couple of driver updates it beated the 7800GTX in majority of the games and even came close to 7800GTX 512mb performance. Im assuming G80 will have highly programmable shaders etc, and will eventually be twice as fast as the last gen cards after couple of driver updates.

Time for a ban.

why?

i use bat guano on my plants . . . awesome stuff!

and Cookie Monster, "twice as fast" is what i had in mind. it is doubtful that driver revisions will increase from +30 overall to +100% . . .

and the x1800 was pretty much an embaassment to ati . . . ;)

30% faster sounds good to me, who wants to buy my X1900XTX? It clocks very nicely. I'd like to have read the thread but all the goons and batshit got in the way. :D

Like I said, I hope there are better visuals to be reaped from this than just raw frames. Current X1900's/7900's in SLI or CF will perform well with any game out and then some. If G80 can bring better IQ while maintaining these supposed improvements then I think it will be money well spent.

Batshit, never heard that one before... B+ for originality. Unfortunately, I think a few people here have suffered some irreparable brain damage, heavy metals poisoning perhaps (although there are treatments available).

Batshit is one of the histories you can assign to a Malkavian vampire in Vampire Bloodlines. If you've played the game an read apoppin's posts, you'll see the similarities... (I should have posted from much later in the game where the Malkavian armour is a feathery billowing "elton john" outfit and a "cat in the hat" style hat - the animation has to be seen to be believed...

EDIT: Couldn't resist posting up an image of Batshit all decked out in his "armour".

Apoppin, note his sunnies are a pinkish (rose) color (they just appeared greenish before due to the local lighting conditions when I did the screen grab).

Anyway, I thoroughly recommend anyone who has the game to play through as a malkavian - it's one of the best gaming laughs I've ever had - and if you don't own the game, go purchase it, pronto! One of the best PC games ever (and proof positive that Valves Source shaders worked just fine on nv3x without a rewrite btw...).

Low power consumption is a terrific thing to be sure. And although I am not too happy about the power consumption of this new gen, from both camps, why shouldn't they consume this much power? Look at the specs of G80. They are monstrous. Why would it not require monstrous amounts of power to run it? Especially on 90nm.

The thing is, even if this 30% over ATI's top flagship is true, it might not be as bad as you think if everything else is also improved and what the card can actually do. Image quality could be vastly improved, new types of AA/AF, onboard physics (possibly) FP16 HDR+AA 128 bit. Etc. etc. etc. Maybe nvidia focused a lot of their time to make an all around superior card from it's previous gens. And maybe, 30% is conservative or worst case scenario. We shall see very shortly.

For some people that's not even a concern, because if that was the case then the x1900 series would have failed.

I heard 200w, that's not THAT bad... considering it's still on 90nm. Just wait for the refreshes, 80nm should kick ass.

I just read that Ati is going to come out with 45nm in 2008 :Q good news for you eh? :D

I agree that G80 performance is almost GUARANTEED to increase as drivers mature. Remember, this is a totally new core design and the driver teams are going to need time to optimize their code. Early on in the game (like now), they're simply working on bug fixes and MAJOR performance issues. The fine tuning will come later.

With all these new features, the only major worry I have is that there isn't a repeat of the PureVideo fiasco.

And if ATI drops the x1950 xtx price enough they'll have a good temporary answer to the 8800 gts.

And the only benefit the 8800 will have then is DX10 support. I am going to have a good chuckle about all the folks who shell out money for this thing before the R600 is out (not because the R600 will likely be a faster/better part, but because there really isn't any point to shell out $600 for a video card at this point).

well said.

There are two distinct PCB's - one for the GTX and one for the GTS (edit see GTS pic below)

Notice the pics were taken in an asian warehouse - not exactly where you would expect to find a prototype - I'm guessing these are what the board vendors recieve, which they then relabel and try to differentiate.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that the games that G80 will be playing in it's life time aren't out yet and we don't know how our current SLI or CF systems will run those new games. Guild Wars, Dark Messiah, Neverwinter Nights those are going to be some fun games and will no doubt stress our systems. The question is by how much.

EDIT: I said Guild Wars .... I meant Quake Wars... been playing way too much FFXI too caught up in MMORPG madness. ya ya I know. :)

current DX9 games are what g80 will be judged by - on Nov 8th . . . not future games . . .
