With everything said, I agree that waiting is the best move for anyone right now, regardless of your position. There is not a game out right now that needs G80. I might be wrong, but the first such game that might need G80/R600 is Crysis.
Try Oblivion at high res and max eye-candy. It makes any modern day rig squeal (quad SLi might do it but I haven't seen benchmarks to be sure). FEAR is also just playable with Crossfire/SLi at high res and max eye-candy. A single card that could do the job of two current cards would be nice.
Yea I had always thought the aforementioned were playable, not super fast, but playable a bit above a minmum level. It seems that you think its a bit below it. But deoending on what you mean by high res also.
Still, these
are popular games but only 2 and the performance at 1280x1024 and under is still very fast with any high end ati or nvidia card.
Plus it never really hurts to wait, unless its a short term thing which a new product launch isnt, or you are trying to resell your older hardware. You just end up payiing less.
At the very least, I would wait til Vista drops and see what more mature gpu drivers, an early os, cheaper G80's can do with some DX10 action or maybe wait till crysis, project offset, quake wars, battlefield 2 patch 2.9(lol) comes out.
