It should be when the economy is booming. Then you use that money for times like these.

taxes raise themselves when the economy is booming.

the problem is that the gov't sees all that new money coming in and decides to spend it all at once instead of paying down the bonds it used to finance its services during the prior recession (or saving it for the next recession)

And citizens keeping sending these sorts of clowns back to the seats of power, so we're all at fault.

You're right.

Running out of money to pay for the votes you bought in the last election via more and more social programs that enslave the people to state? Simple: raise taxes on the evil rich to continue the same trend. The slaves don't care, they're uninspired so getting government scraps are all they think they can get anyway and once they're dependent on the government more with each passing day, the less likely they'll break free of their dependence or work hard enough to give up their cushy benefits.

Enslaved to the state? I have a brother and his girl who roll out of bed about 2 pm, after having sex all morning. Turn on their free lights, go get their free food, pick up their kids from free child care. Party and play poker all night. etc etc etc. Pretty sweet deal.

Me OTOH is the slave. I get up about 6 am, work and worry about how to put food on table. Save receipts, pay taxes, Balance accounts etc. And if I'm lucky get laid once a week.

I think you have slave and master mixed up.

How do your brother and his girl do that? Are you paying for their lifestyle with your taxes? Then you're a slave to the state.

How? Like welfare and some prison program he got on after getting out. Yes I agree about me being a slave. I could count a hundred obligations and stress I have they don't. Franky I'm a little jealous sometimes especially the fuskin all day part. He lives like a carefree pillaging viking and I live like you're supposed to according to society with obligations up the ying yang.

Everytime I visit it turns more and more into some disneyland for the rich.
And the NYC that gave us so much dies.
Bring back the culture\working class tax base and artists who made NYC the place people actually would want to visit.
Just don't up the MTA fares too much, the rich drive cars, tax them back to the 'burbs baby!

My side hurts from laughing so hard. Post of the year nomination?

Why do you hate successful people? Why didnt you do more in life? Does it bother you that you can't afford a personal automobile?

Yea, that is what NYC needs. A bunch of income-free "artists" running around living off of the state.

This is why we need to get rid of gov't-sponsored public assistance. No work, no food. Starvation is usually a great motivator.

It's not the kids fault their parents are worthless why should they suffer? And they are both unemployable - And I mean worthless - as in can't talk because brains are boiled out. Can't hold jobs as in violent mood swings. beating down bosses etc. What are you going to do with them besides warehouse them either in prison or Sec 8? You can't stave them to death they'll just take what they want and usually hurt someone in the process. You've never encountered scandalous people who have nothing to loose, have you?

This.

1) It's great to think of punishing the parents, but in reality you are also punishing the children. As a society, we believe all children are entitled to certain things and as long is this is true we will spend money raising other people's children. Paying welfare to parents is likely cheaper than making all children wards of the state.

2) TANF is a way to maintain social obedience among a group of people that might otherwise wreak havoc. Some might say starvation will force these people to find work. However, I would guess that most people collecting welfare are geographically concentrated. What do you think is going to happen with thousands of now starving individuals that have easy access to firearms? At best, you have a new massive pool of labor depressing wages and at worst you have complete social disorder.

3) Not everyone on TANF and Medicaid is undeserving. There are truly some people just down on their luck and trying to get by. Maybe someone was laid off or injured. No one likes the abusers, but social programs definitely have their purposes.

In a way, you hit the nail on the head. If a citizen is living off of government funds, the most compassionate thing you can possibly do for that citizen is to make him work in the community. If the person is able, and most people are, they should be given a choice of jobs within the community that their physical and mental abilities allow. Respect is key, treat people with respect, help them grow both in work ethic if they need it and out of their bad fortune so they can become truely productive in society.

Less 400LB and gaining slobs eating a bucket of Chicken McNuggets off my tax dollars and more 300LB and falling people learnng some responsibility and work ethic out picking up trash in their community.

Sad thing is that soon, NJ will be adopting many of these new taxes as we're such a copy cat state.

It seems that the government is hell bent on taxing the hell out of the people for every little thing, instead of simply cutting programs/services.

Having a car in the city is a amazingly stupid idea.
I will buy my monthly ticket and be set thank you.

Great movie, check it out sometime.

Ahem, and you too.

A good use for a car is scrap to create high speed rail infrastructure, that's about it

I fail to see the evil in gentrification. Real estate in any city is usually prime real estate, and the poor have no more right to it than the rich.

Think about what you said for a minute, how would this be possible if one has more money then the other? Your statement is false. The working class have no choice but to be uprooted.
I would rather not get into a debate of fairness where I could go into a whole tangent but what you say makes no sense in reality. The core taxpaying working class are screwed. And the issue is a whole lot more complicated then it seems on the surface considering developers and urban planners and zoning have no interest in a working, functional city, just making more money for themselves.
We have not seen the obvious negative aspects of gentrification yet as a whole. But it is taking its toll in small ways so far already. (culture, upward mobility etc.)

I am glad to see many old building renovated which were decayed husks in the 80s, but at the same time is it worth losing the soul of the city, and the working class that built it?
Ponder that if you will. I do often being a urban dweller.

I loved the seedy side of NYC, it felt real, and it was fun, exciting and attracted people who thought outside the box who created real change. Manhattan seems almost like a serialized hospital room or stuffy museum exhibit the rich can only afford to live in now.

hahahahah :) Thank you for providing a good laugh, I don't frequently hear that kind of socialist flower power "starving artist" hate the rich drivel anymore. You apparently have no concept of the laws of supply and demand that drive up the rent and living costs in large cities.

Call it what you will but "supply and demand" without regard for the actual human consequences = fail. Enjoy your laugh, this is why conservatives have no power anymore.
Folks like you are going to make the next few years such fun, even more then watching your ideology fall apart at the seams the past decade or so.
Your tears will taste like the finest wine. Your petulant insults reek of the sweetest desperation.

Bwahahahaha  Silly boy, you think real power is just in the hands of the president, or congress? LOL Thanks for another good laugh. The wealthy buy and sell politicians of both parties to do their bidding, you're naive enough to believe that somehow the wealthy will now lose power? Riiiiiiiight.

I hate to burst your bubble, there will not be any tears nor desperation from me. My ideology has not fallen apart in the least, my ideology has not been represented, we've had lousy idiots in all levels of government from both parties, neither of which represent my ideology.

The bottom line is that NY is in deep trouble because of the tax/spend/tax more/spend more mentality, and it's only going to get worse. The only part that annoys me is that I'm sure at some point in the near future, they'll get a massive bailout from the federal government (which is itself broke for the same reason as NY), which just enables states like NY to continue their otherwise unsustainable stupidity.

That is the oldest cop out for a failed ideology.

There is a simple reason why there is no such thing in the real world except in the dreams of talk radio wingnuts, but this thread is getting hijacked.

Please explain how my feeling that I have never been adequately or accurately represented is a "cop out for a failed ideology."

In case you didn't know, I'm not a Republican...
