and 8am classes really do suck, 50% of my senior year in HS i didnt have a class beofre noon, it was really annoying getting used to getting up at 8m for class after that

but after freshmen year you can normally get around it

I'm a sophomore and I wasn't able to get around it.

Stop whining. I took a Saturday 8 am class and I had to commute with no rush hour service for over an hour.

Haven't had a class that early since junior year of HS (when school started at 730). My senior year, I had no class the first 2 periods, so I would walk in at 9AM. My earliest class this year (3rd year of undergrad) is 930 - PChem - Quantum Mechanics.

I never get tired of the drama queen students bitching about having to go to an 8am class.

In the real world there is a very good chance you will have to be at work at least that early, if not earlier (my managers and I all arrive at work between 6am and 6:45am), so consider this good practice.

I skipped my pre-10am classes during second year of college (skipped everything in first, so that doesn't count). Pretty pointless to even go since my brain was on complete auto-pilot; I took every break to sleep.

In highschool, it was the compulsory attendance that forced me. Once you get the illusion of choice in college, game over. When you start working (mines started at 8:30 last 2 summers), you are forced to again, so you just do it. Helps a bit when you know you get paid.

Because you don't need to absorb much information in higschool or at your job. Try following multi varible calculus (or any other difficult subject) at 8am in top-10 program...

I had Grad macroeconomics last semester at 8am... never made it on time.

I spent more time working in high school.

High school:
School 8:00am - 4:30pm
Get home, eat
Homework from 6:00pm - 2:30am (average night)

college:
School 10:00am - 2:00pm
Work for about 6 hours
I actually have time to relax in college.

is multy var Calc 2 or 3 i cant remember

my college was smart, it didnt have any of the hard science or math classes before 10AM

3....4 if you are in the quarter system.

For those arguing that the "real world" isn't like this, you need to remember that classes such multi-variable calculus and others that offer a considerable challenge to the student require that they pay a lot more attention during that 1-2 hour period in class than most need to spend during the first hour at work. Yes, we all need to pay attention at work and it is a challenge but the mind works differently when you are trying to learn something as opposed to doing your job in most cases. The mind usually learns much better when it is fully awake. However, a lot of people are fully capable of doing their jobs when they are half asleep for that first hour.

I did college. I avoided 8am classes like the plague because I wanted to improve what I got out of each lecture. I am now working and the amount which my mind needs to take in on an hour by hour basis is nothing compared to college lectures with challenging courses.

Lastly, a lot of you must have had really lame college experiences if you do not understand going out and enjoying your free time and then going to class on very little sleep. It's not like any of you chose 8am classes because you wanted to. :p

I did my best to avoid early morning classes, I'm just not that sharp in the morning and am a much better afternoon - evening thinker.

It feels different. Sitting in a boring ass lecture at 7:30 am where your attendance isn't counted is different from actually doing work at 7:30 and not wanting to get fired. Motivation is everything

8am classes are retarded. They spell don't go to class for me.

I don't know how I survived high school. I handled 8am class for 1 month ok my senior year because work forced me to be up there at 8am over the summer but once midterms got through and I started relaxing a bit more, then the whole get in for 8am class started slipping.

I usually get to work around 9. It's nice. I have flexible hours.

When I'm tired, my trick is coffee and diet Dr. Pepper. Lots of both. Jolts me awake pretty well.

Jeez, that much work in HS? I never had more than 30 minutes of homework a night for all my classes combined. I did more work in 1 quarter of 1st year of college than all of HS combined.

You want to know the sick part? Once you leave school and bask in the glory of the real world, you'll crave to be sitting in an 8AM calc class rather than show up to work.

Ya, there is something wrong here. I went to HS from 8am-2pm and then spent another 2 hours at the school doing ROTC activities. That was followed by going home to eat and do homework or go to work for 15-20 hours per week. Homework from 6pm-2:30am is ridiculous and I don't believe it if that is a regular HS schedule even with IB and AP classes. I took the hardest classes possible in HS and I didn't have anywhere near that much work to do.

That's when we got out. All the other high schools in the city got out at 3. We had 2 hour classes, which were excellent compared to the standard 50 minutes classes most schools have.

We also had harder teachers than the other high schools. For example, I was ranked #41/~550, but at the second best high school in town I would've been ranked in the top 5.

I just went to an academically excellent school, which brought all the smart kids to it, which in turn brought better and harder teachers.

What did you gain out of it that students such as myself with more typical hours got? Also, understand that what you went through is highly unusual so you can't expect others to have gone through it.

I'm not a morning person. That said, I have spent most of my working life on the job at 6 am. I love to hear the folks whining about taking classes at 8 am, bwahahaha. School is a job. Do the job, play after. My own circadian rhythms make it very hard to stay awake between 2 pm and 5 pm if I'm not doing something physical.

My high school went from 8:00 to 4:00.

I also almost never made it to my 7:45 class and have no problem getting to work... albeit I don't have to get to work at 7:30 like some here, but the thing about me is sometimes I can get more than enough sleep and still have problems waking up. But oddly enough, it seems every day I wake up around 8 regardless of when I go to bed (11pm... 4am)! This past weekend I had a weird thing happen... I went to bed kind of early (read: passed out) and ended up getting up at 5:30 in the morning... weird! The next day I got up at 9AM. I have never experienced this thing you humans call "morning" during a weekend before!
