I basically have most of my parts (except cpu and ram, but I will use my current ones until I decide which to get). I don't really want to pay an extra $1500 on video cards (step up + another gtx512) if the performance boost will not be that significant.

It is not worth geting 2x7800GTX(512) and will not find them in stock for awhile at they will cost at least $750 each.
2x7800gtx (256) will be faster then two 7800GT but i dont think it is worth the exta $200 or so and since you have one GT itwould be easier for you just to get another one.

Woo... Check in at the eVGA Forums! There is alot of info on the current step-program situation. Since you're already signed up and in the queue, eVGA is offering a number of promotions. I believe they range in cash back if you already have a SLI set-up to hundreds of dollars off to get a second card to go SLI to staying in the queue and if no GTX 512 becomes available, they'll put you in the queue for the G71(which I think would be your best bet).
I still can't figure out why people talk about the GTX 512 being vaporware. If it was, I wouldn't have received one from TigerDirect last week. As I've mentioned in other threads, TigerDirect has had them in stock several times over the last couple of weeks and ZZF had both the BFG and eVGA models in last week. Unfortunately, they sell out like hot cakes.
OP, check the eVGA forums! You'll get the right answers and info there!

what the hell does that mean????

Vaporware means it doesn't exist, as no one has ever seen it. I paid $750 at TD but it comes w/ COD2(which I will sell) and I bought it thru fatwallet(you get a 3% cashback if you're a fw member). So, it ends up being around $700.
The questions you need to ask yourself. Do you have a power supply good enough for SLI? What kind of resolutions are you playing at now? Why do you want to go SLI? You shouldn't need a second GT if you're playing under 1600x1200.
The eVGA promotions should count even if you're in Canada. Here is the latest thread:
