If the $649 price is legit, I'll definitely be waiting to see how the R520 performs vs. the 7800.

If it gets to $500, it should be okay.

I agree with the 24 pipes comment, 200 mhz is enough, and dual link DVI is a +++

The chip did go through a die shrink, although it is a good bit larger than the 6800 design even after the shrink, it is rumoured to put out a lot less heat and draw a lot less power.

The prices are always out of wack the first months of release.

I saw one of the supposed boxes (http://img289.echo.cx/img289/5360/7800gtxpower0gs.jpg), and it says that you'll need a PSU with 26A on the +12V rail for a single card. That is more power than Dual 6800 Ultra's (25A PSU according to ASUS).

Bigger resolutions.
You need dual link for the larger LCD from Apple I think (the 23" LCD).

The ability to run higher resolutions over DVI, basically. Most people don't need it, but it's a nice thing to have anyways. :)

Single-link DVI goes up to around 1920x1200 I believe (just enough for the 23-24" LCD's, full 1080p HDTV, etc.). Dual-link is needed for the Apple 30" Cinema display (2560x1600 resolution).

Thanks, sounds like a good option for people into htpc.

Huh?

He was probably referring to our responses on dual-link DVI, I guess. (Although you wouldn't actually need it in that situation unless you somehow had a TV with higher than 1080p resolution, which I'm fairly sure don't exist yet :p)

Exactly. I can now finally look at getting Apple's 30" LCD. 2560x1600 sweetness! Now let's see if the new 7800 can keep up at that res. I don't even need AA. It would be nice if I could use a little AA (2x-4x), but I could do without it at that res.:)

If are buying an HDTV (Projection, LCD, DLP, Plasma), you aren't going to max out a standard DVI connection (1920x1200). You'll only need dual-link for resolutions over 1920x1200.

I was referring to monitors like Apple's new 30" LCD, which go to higher resolutions. You're right though, my HDTV only goes to 720p, and like most wouldn't beneft from the dual link DVI.

I assume the monitor has poor response times for gaming?...More of a graphic designer, work monitor?
