First off, just say screw it and get the 7800GT.

Second, I'd get the 7800GT (or two of them ), for some reasons I can't think of right now.

Look here 7800GT beats the X1800XL in almost every benchmark (only loses one and I think thats Half-Life 2? but thats typical)

EDIT: Evga is the cardmaker to get 516 or the 518 with the free mobo if you need one.

X1800XL vs. 7800GT - 7800GT is faster at 1280x1024 - Nvidia cards usually win without AA/AF. X1800Xl catches up with AA/AF enabled. Even though for most games they are equal in performance, where 7800GT wins, it is by a lot in OpenGL games. So I again vote for 7800GT ... and that is even if they were equal prices, but 7800GT costs less....

Did you ever think about newer driver increasing performance? That review did more thorough testing and analysis that most other sites would even imagine doing, so dont start the fanboy argument, cause the door swings both ways...

Actually the newer cores supposedly overclock much better, plus its drivers have matured.

Lol. Give me a break. Of course it's the same card (although like Sickbeast mentioned possibly better cores) but drivers do mature. If you look at SLI benchmarks when that technology first came out and SLI benchmarks now you'll see a big difference. What happened?? Did the cards get switched around for better-performing ones?? Nope. Drivers got better.

Well, now ive narrowed down to what Gt if that is the one. The CO......What's the difference from the CO and the OC versions'? From what I see....the CO runs with the GTX. The X1800 is $319 and the 7800 GT co is $314......hmmmm...makes it harder now since same price... ...

Edit # 2...I need a PSU upgrade....what is minimum for these cards....?

I have the BFG 7800 GT OC card & play BF2 & FEAR with it...Both games are phenomenal with this card...I run my card @ stock settings w/ stock cooling...You can't go wrong with this card...I upgraded from an X800XL & the differences are obvious...

I don't plan on overclocking which ever card I get....so that don't matter to me. I just like the stock performance which from either card should be great. The XL right now for Connect 3D is $319 at the Egg. The GT is $20 cheaper..

If stock is what you're shooting for, look for the EVGA 7800GT CO SE (part # 516). It's $20 less than the regular CO because supposedly its clocke dlower, but my CO SE came stock 470/1100, CO speeds. The CO is hands down a better deal than the X1800XL if you dont plan to overclock.

X1800XL scores higher than the 7800GT in 3DM05, but in 3DM06, ATI cards get raped by Nvidia cards. a single GT scores almost as high as a X1800XT, likewise, GT SLI scores almost the same as X1800XT Crossfire.

Well, Right now I can play COD 2 at 1280 with my X800 Pro with some AA/AF ( not alot..but some )...with no slow down what so ever. Certainly it should be better on either of these 2 cards

SLI or CrossFire...( not sure yet..will depend on which card I go with ) could be in the near future. But for now...Just need a good quality PSU for a single card. Can upgrade again for dual card's later. Maybe like in June or so. Right now im using a 218 watt that came with a HP from WalMart because my Thermaltake 480 just up and quit. Can you reccomend one with good amps on the +12 rail ? Was lookin to stay under $100 on PSU...

The X1800?s can do HDR (openEXR) and AA (the 7800?s can?t). The X1800?s also have a higher quality (non-angle dependent) AF that can be switched on that is better than anything NV has.

The 7800?s have bad texture shimmering in many games -- poor image quality. You can get rid if this ?somewhat? by running in HQ (note - the cards are benched only Q mode) but you will be taking a 10-15% hit in performance. So I would put the 7800GT slower than an X800 XL if you are going to be running it in HQ mode.

That article I linked to also used HQ mode on Nv cards to reduce shimmering. That would explain why the x800xl came out a bit faster on average than the 6800gt, contrary to the popular myth from last year. Also gives a perspective on the 7800gt performance. Anyway, the op already decided on the 7800gt, and you cant go wrong with either at those prices.
