Have I lost again or is there some other reason why your post appears to have the correct link, but the link takes me to the following page which then redirects me to NewEgg?

If this is a program set up by the forum admins, I am NOT impressed. However, malware could entirely be possible on my part.
I replaced "http" in this post with "stupid" and the brackets with ? and ?(Unicode chars so it may look like garbage to some.)

No. I waited too long to decide if I wanted to get a 5850.
What is the main difference between the different manufactures?
XFX - Double Lifetime warranty
Asus - Voltage tweak
MSI - BOIS update-able
I am trying to get the best card for the lowest money.

no because hd 5870's are consistently selling out everywhere

An overclock can help make up for it, but you have to keep in mind that the 5870 can also be overclocked, a 5850 will never be as good as a 5870.
A reasonable best case scenario is (after overclocking) that the 5850 is somewhere around 90% of the 5870.

and the 5850s are even harder to grab

not true. 5850 would be 90% of a 5870 at the same clocks, but it is reasonable to assume that you can get much better than 850/1200, especially with voltage tweaking. what if you're at 935/1350? that should be ~ 5870 level performance and is definitely achievable.
