You can exercise your Second Amendment rights by owning a firearm, and/or by firing it on a range. I believe that is what he is trying to get across, and that the ability to defend himself is... a convenient side-effect.

The guy broke into her home. He got into her bathroom and turned off the light. She's naked and wet, it's dark. He has a knife and is dry, she has a shower rod. The odds of her living through this first episode are astounding since the attacker has all the momentum.

Did I mention he has a knife and broke into her home? If you do something like that it's pretty certain you have an intent to kill if you don't get what you want.

So now he forces her into the bedroom, she's still naked and wet. He's still armed and dangerous. I'm pretty sure in this situation you're amazed your still alive and aren't quite thinking straight.

So what do you do? You know you have a gun; possibly a phone to call 911; maybe you can run; she already offered him money and that option to leave her alone seems off the table.

I'm thinking 911 isn't going to help me, he'll still have the knife and will be pissed. Maybe she can run, but she's naked and wet so slip and fall is pretty great. About the only viable option is wound. We don't know what kind of shot she is and she's still not in the right frame of mind so I'm thinking the safest bet is to shoot him up, he is an armed intruder after all. And mind you she must not be that great of a shot if he didn't die right away. So if she did try to wound him who's to say he still couldn't attack her?

1) he's already on top of her. Pretty obvious it was close range if she was trying to hit him with a shower rod and he forced her into the bedroom. Not very much space to just wave the gun at him and he not be able to just come knock it out of her hand.

2) See #1.

3) Call the police - while she's being attacked? Do you think she really had time to call them, then wait for them to show up?

4) Refer to #1 - close quarters, coming at her - at this point it is shoot. Very unlikely she had the space and time (let alone be calm enough) to be sure that she only shot him where it would injure and not kill. A .22 isn't very big, so odds are in favor of it just being an injury shot not a fatal shot anyway. But she won the dice roll there and the thug did die from it.

And those five shots can go anywhere after that potentially harming an innocent person. Center mass is always the best place to shoot an attacker because it's a large target and it will generally end the threat. Anyone with a gun should know this.
