The analogy only works if there was a gaping safety issue BEFORE the upgrade, like "front end collisions cause the car to spontaneously explode, killing all occupants"

But of course that's not possible for them to acheive perfection the first time. There are how many hundred million lines of code in Windows? And how many countless hackers working every day on breaking that code?

That MS works to provide these patches for free is IMO just one more example of their excellent customer service.
