FYI, my Elite arrived today and it's a Jasper. The same for 2 other people in my Hot Deals thread, and the same as in another thread here. No Falcons found yet, so MS might have been kind and used them all up before making the new packages.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I didn't actually care about the lack of an HDMI cable - I preferred to buy my own. The removal of the "analog/TOSLINK with HDMI" adapter sucks, though. You can buy an HDMI cable for cheap online, but that stupid adapter is rather more expensive for the people who need it. I'm also a little surprised that the 120gb HDD is still $150.

IMHO, the PS3 is a better value right now in purely hardware terms. Microsoft needs to get on the ball and ship a revised console with _at least_ built-in wireless, and hopefully a larger hard drive.

it's simple enough to get around that.

break the housing off the stock cable that comes with your xbox360. (think it's a component cable.)

plug in cable, optical cable into slot, and HDMI cable into open HDMI slot.

The problem is the Elite doesn't come with the component video cable anymore either, it comes with the composite video cable. I don't believe the composite cable comes with TOSLINK.

Yeah, none of the Xbox 360s that are still being produced have the component cable.

I just checked and you're right, the composite cable in the new Elite package does not have a toslink jack. Good thing I'd already decided to plug the HDMI into my receiver instead of the TV.

Despite the Amazon "what's in the box" saying otherwise you do still get a nice 8' ethernet cable.

=sigh= too bad I had to work tonight, I don't even know whether my 360 will power up yet.

It probably won't power up. You know that the 360 has a 54% failure rate right  You might get lucky and it will work 🙂

After waiting almost 4 years for the really reliable edition it would be a blackfly in my chardonnay if I happened to get one of the few DOA units that happen with any product.

asy to explain. When you're paid Sony viral marketer, you can sometimes mix up what you paid for and what they gave you for free.

I doubt the validity of this poll, quite a bit actually. The people most apt to fill out a survey about reliability are those that have had issues with it, not those that are content to go along with the flow. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if all the numbers were inflated a reasonable amount for all the systems, although the 360 I would assume is the most inflated in a GI poll just due to the nature of the magazine(it's major push for subs is GameSpot with used games, GS's number one profit generator is 360 used games).

Link.

Saw that 3.0 was available, has anyone updated yet and if they have are you forced into that gawdawful new XMB or is their an option to keep the old style interface?

Link.

While the fat PS3s have been quite durable, PS2s were absolute garbage, comparable to the 360. Maybe the Slims will be like their heavier brother, but the memory of the PS2 is still rather fresh in my mind and may give me pause to get rid of a rather proven platform for one that may or may not be flaky. Honestly, if it was Nintendo I would completely agree with you, neither Sony nor MS have a track record that screams to me to trust a new design they offer by default(rather unfortunately, this is the reason I don't have a BC PS3 now, I wasn't going to buy into what I saw as a likely unreliable platform at $500).

Link,

Watched the vid Quesy linked, have to say firmware 3.0 looks like total ass, downgrade in pretty much every way

Link.

I'm sure if I did work for Sony, I would have been canned by now, I could dig up a ton more, I call them like I see them. Also, while you may not realize it, mentioning what came packed in with two systems, both of which are discod one of which has been for what, a year, wouldn't be a very good way to push Sony's product now would it? That said, I have actually expressed my concerns with why I would hesitate to buy a Slim right off(talking it over with the wife the other day, the last functioning PS2 in the house is dieing so it looks like we will be on number 7).

In this particular case I decided to check up with some other buddies.

One of them got 2 Dual Shock3s with his PS3, in the box. Where did he buy it? Target. He didn't get component cables however.

Another one of my buddies got three games with his system, no component cables though. Again, bought it at Target.

From the people I have talked to, it seems like Target ran several out of the ordinary packages with their PS3s.

I went and bought an elite today. Build date 7/18/09 and 12.1 amp power rating on the back of the console. forgot to look at the power supply but i'm sure it's a jasper.

I called MS to see about getting a hard drive migration kit and they wanted 13 bucks for it. I thought they were free if you bought an elite?

I'll probably end up buying a memory card if i can find one cheap. I don't have much of a choice if i want to keep my game saves..

I thought they were free if you bought an elite?

They used to be, but the Elite used to be $400. Looks like this is part of their cost-cutting along with dropping the HDMI and component cables.

Yeah, seems that way. For only a little bit more money I can buy a memory card which is a much better value than a cable I'd never use again.

man, ms still nickle and diming bs. i would have thought it would be done w/ by now. not putting hd cables in a hd gaming system box is just plain dumb. and if you have ever opened up a 360, you know that even if they sold them @$50 ms would be making $$ on them, especially w/ the smaller die chips.

that said still my console of choice, but man, just dumb ms bullshit.

my rate of success:

failure - i think it is a zephyr elite - has hdmi, black, 120GB hdd but has the newer gpu heatsink, old cpu heatsink and the 16.5A power brick - fans have the 3pin design - build date of 07/07

works out of its case - white/20GB / year 05 or 06unit - 16.5A power brick - did the xclamp mod after it "died"

still never skipped a beat - white/20GB year 06 unit - 16.5A power brick - did the xclamp mod as soon as i got this one....

You can probably find a cable on craigslist, ebay, or FS/FT here pretty cheap.

If you get a memory card, I'd get that Datel card that let's you put a SD memory card in it so that you can get up to 16GB of memory.
