Why didn't they drop the Arcade or at the very least have it include a 20GB?

Seems like a missed opportunity on their part...

Because the $199 Arcade is the cheapest current-gen console on the market by $50 and it sells well. There's no need to undercut themselves right before the holiday season starts to arrive.

Target has them on price cut already, $249 for the Pro and $299 for the Elite both were the old box art and since Target keeps them behind glass I didn't have a chance to peak at the power rating.

Black paint is outpacing oil at $79 a barrel.

Give it a year, though, and all the paint speculators will drop and the bubble will burst.

My local Target didn't have the new pricing, at least not on the stickers. *shrugs*

With the PS3 the same price as the 360 now, the 360 isn't looking like such a great deal any more.

Agreed. PS3 is now the best value if you have an HDTV. Blu-ray + games + built-in wifi for $299 =

Yep. With the PS3 at $299.99, the 360 Elite should be at at least $249.99 in order for them to be comparable values. The question is, can MS afford that kind of a price cut?

I'm sure they could afford it; MS has some $30 billion in cash in the bank! The problem with elite pricing, is due to the same problem that has existed in marketing and sales in every company ever. They're afraid of what it would look like to the public to have an even bigger price cut than the slim. Dropping the elite to a price lower than the ps3 slim has that implicit suggestion that the top-of-the-line Elite model is "inferior" to the ps3 Slim model. It doesn't matter that we know hardware-wise the elite is inferior, it just matters that it doesn't "look" like it in the ads.

I bet Microsoft is still making a profit after this price cut. If they priced the Elite a little more competitively like at $250, they would probably lose money.

Of course, they probably wouldn't take a loss like Sony did.

The MS PR guy sure said said all the right PR stuff that the general audience would take as gospel. I know most tv advertisers dumb down their ads to 5th grade level, but man, it's pretty insulting to read all that.

People who buy the Elites don't use the HDMI cable? I'm calling BS on that. 80% of the people I know personally has their 360 hooked up by HDMI. A few of them are Elite owners. Whether you want to argue that they are not all Elite owners, that's pointless, as it's 360 owners that I know is using the HDMI. And if you are getting the top of the line unit, you most likely have relatively top of the line equipment like TVs because you can afford it. So of course you're going to hook it up by HDMI.

The buyers who buy the Arcade, most don't get a HDD? I'm more likely to think they don't, but it can't be that low. And when the Arcade was released, it did increase their monthly sales by a good portion, unlike what the MS guy said. I think most people just swapped out their old HDD from their broken or repaired 360. And all my friends who bought an Arcade all got a HDD later. So again, what a bunch of BS he said. I know a few here who didn't buy a HDD yet, but still plan to.

What did you expect the spokesperson to say? "Bend over, because we're enjoying screwing you for all you're worth?" It's a dumb reason and everyone knows it, including Microsoft corporate. But there are certain forms to be followed in the PR business, and so a "customer-centric reason" is spouted off, however inane it is.

That's sort of like how Nintendo said that less than 1% of GameCube owners used the component cables and that's why they removed the component option.

Besides, most people are idiots with AV stuff! I went to a friend's house and he had his Xbox 360 hooked up to his 47" DLP via composite, running at 480i! I wedged my way behind his TV and connected the component cables, then set his Xbox to output at the maximum possible resolution, and it looked a ton better. He thanked me.

That's really unlikely. Blu Ray and built in wifi will never make up for the significantly worse game selection. Not to mention the significantly different online experience each console offers.

Don't mean to start a flame war, but at least from a hardware feature standpoint, the slim is pretty damn good.

ps3 and xbox360 share probably 75% of the same game selection (yes that # is made up).

but IMO, exclusives on PS3 > exclusives on Xbox360 (console exclusives, so i'm counting Gears and Mass Effect and all that jazz as a 360 exclusive).

I tried to use the cable that came with my elite but it ended up crapping out after a few months.. Replaced it with a monoprice and never looked back..

Whats the deal with HDMI cables anyway ? Its not just MS and Sony, but it seems like all consumer products that have HDMI out dont include cables. Seems like it's pushing the trend to use aftermarket cables, which sucks because unless you buy them online they are ridiculously priced. Its funny, because the quality of cables probably matter less now, than it did in the "olden days" when analog components included every cable you needed.

Its a giant conspiracy headed up by Best Buy and Wal-Mart. They strong arm the MFG to pull cables so they can sell the ultra high margin accessories *shiftyeyes*

Of course, which exclusive selections you like is entirely personal preference. Personally, I prefer the 1st party Wii games to the exclusives on either the PS3 or 360. I can't get enough of Mario, Smash Bros., Zelda, and such 😱

I always thought that Microsoft including an HDMI cable and Sony not was a big plus for Microsoft, but now that it's being cut out of the Elite package, I don't really think it is that big of a deal. Sony always marketed their box as the high-def, blu-ray experience to be had, but didn't even include any cable that could enable it. Microsoft just markets a game machine, which isn't automatically implied to be high-definition, so not including a "premium" cable isn't that big of a deal in my mind. Surely an HDMI cable doesn't cost any more than making a composite cable, so surely Microsoft's and Sony's data shows that more people use composite still over HDMI. That may change in 2 or 3 years, who knows.

HDMI cables are cheap anyway. So what if the general public doesn't know about monoprice....I do, and that's all that matters.

Yeah... it's hard not to facepalm when I see people buying overpriced cables from Best Buy, but at least they're stimulating the economy. It's not my money.

Considering that these retailers make like nothing off the consoles, I'm not sure I'd call it a conspiracy so much as "obvious fact". 🙂

Maybe they are planning something for the launch of Natal. They did show it pretty early, I wouldn't rule out that they are working on something big for its launch if they want people to know about it so far in advance.
