You know, I have never met, in person, an Anand member.

Really? I was introduced to it in a computer class back in a college. Half the class was on the board, as Usenet & BBS's sort of grew dimmer in popularity for chatting. I lurked for a long time before joining in ~2004. There are a few people I've met separately still on here, but a lot of people have simply grown up & moved on with adult responsibilities or moved into other careers or are using other social media platforms these days.

I still like hanging around here because of the people & the limited pool size. Reddit is virtually infinite & can get a little group-thinky for me & there just aren't the same personalities in most subs because everything is so fractionalized. I work on computers all day in servers rooms or at my bench, so it's nice to have at least a modicum of social interaction during the day when I'm not working around people haha.

I was in my last year of a 5 year college tour when I discovered the site in 2000. I believe the forum reset around that time.

Took a trip up to Ohio to help my folks out this week. Was driving my mother back from an appointment and met a pair of railroad tracks that are meant for what appears to be off road only vehicles. Put a nice gash in the front drivers tire and the rear drivers tire has a bubble in the side wall. Tesla doesn't have the tires or loaner rims available so they towed me to the local tire store. Hopefully they do get the tires in tomorrow as promised and that the rims are true. Nothing like $850 spent to replace tires on a car with 2k miles.

* Prices went up another $1,000 on the 3 & Y
* Not available for 11 months now. Deliveries in October 2022

Thoughts:

Interesting on both the price increase & the availability, given that there's a minor redesign coming up, a structural redesign in the works (i.e. fully body casting), the new 4680 cells, and the new structural battery pack design:

Curious to see how this will impact the Cybertruck. tbh I'm planning on 2024/2025 at this point...

I think Tesla has reached a point they will be playing catchup on orders for several years. There is way too much interest in their products already and coming up with a new, less expensive design will only complicate matters. What Elon needs to do is get their own EV installer group to come to your home and do installs and not leave their buyers with bad electrician experiences. At the same time they should be lobbying local municipalities, or at least Congress, to get an OTARD-like ruling allowing homeowners in HOA communities to use Solar Roofs--especially in conjunction with Powerwalls and EV chargers.

Assuming Elon isn't stupid, the Cybertruck is arguably the most important product on their road map. Americans love their pickup trucks, and "Detroit" sells them at high profit margins relative to passenger cars. Tesla has proven you can make a lot of profit selling a desirable BEV sedan but long-term, it's unlikely for the Model 3 to be growing sales. Tesla's future will be staked on what level of annual sales you'll see from the CT and the Model Y.

Considering the chip shortage and Tesla's current strength in the BEV market, raising prices makes perfect business sense. Assuming federal subsidies return in 2022, they won't even have to lower prices to maintain the effective prices to consumers. But without those subsidies, there has to be some ceiling on how many people want a mid-sized sedan for $50k+. (So far they're doing a great job of taking share away from German compact luxury cars, and also from Asian mid-sized sedans.)

You know what? I realized the first time I bought a BMW over the Honda there was something there that was different and not just the extra price. It was the look, feel, quiality and seemingly intelligent engineering that went on. The Honda in the house lasted 7 years before its maker couldn't identify the problem, let alone fix it. The first BMW lasted 17 years. When there was a problem with the Honda, I was left at my disposal to find alternative rides for a day or two, but with BMW I got a free loaner. I think the same could be said about most $50K sedans over their $35K counterparts and it comes in the form of customer service and a better product. I also will not miss the $50-60/week fill-up, or waiting in line at Costco pumps. I think that is what is driving the $50K electric sedan craze.

I think we should update the thread title to read: The $35K Tesla Model 3 came in 2017 but current is starting at $45K. :)

Speaking of the pump. We got a flyer in the mail for a new service at Kroger which has the benefit of 2x points towards gas. My wife and I looked at each other as we don't need gas for the Tesla's so the benefits are useless.

Got my first Sentry mode video. Didn't have the car two hours. Some seedy woman, obviously jealous, tried to throw trash on the new car and instead got it in the trash bin in the garage. So much for the wife being respectful to the new girl. :p

It's also the price paid in fall '22 which is 18 months since launch or 3 years since the original announcement and pricing. With inflation, parts shortages and demand all playing a roll, I don't see it as that shocking. Many other things have shot up in price much quicker since March '20 that impact everyone, not just folks wanting a $50k+ EV.

I read that over on the TeslaModel3 subreddit. I checked mine, which is a late-end 2021 Model 3, and they were there. I have not tried to use them so ...

Model Y Long Range is currently $58,990. It's not over $60k like that article falsely suggests. Sure if you add upgrades and options but that's not the base.
That stupid wheel option strikes again!!!!

Model 3 SR and Model Y LR new order delivery times are all the way out to Oct. 2022. Tesla has crazy demand right now. And it's going to get crazier once the $8k federal EV tax rebate passes. So I don't blame Tesla for raising prices. If people don't like the price, they can buy some other company EV. Tesla will likely lower prices once Berlin and Austin factories are ramped up. It took Shanghai about a year to get up to speed. I expect similar timetable for Berlin and Austin. So expect lower prices in 2023. And that's when 4680 batteries should start ramping as well. I know Tesla product pipeline so that's why I still haven't bought Tesla vehicle. Patience is a virtue.
