The only reason why the Grateful Dead were so popular is because the stoners back in the day enjoyed happy catchy music played by stoners like themselves.

You guys are funny. Calling U2, Van Halen, The Beatles, Stones, Doors, Bob Dylan, and others overrated. Shows what you know about music. They may not be producing stuff you like but that doesn't mean they're overrated. I can't stand Nirvana but without them you wouldn't have The Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Velvet Revolver. Eddie Van Halen was the father of all hair band guitarists. I bet Tom Morello would even credit Eddie as one of his influences. But I guess you'd say Buddie Rich or Brian Setzer are overrated too.

FYI Soundgarden was assembled in 1984 and Nirvana was in 1987. Nirvana just made grunge mainstream. It existed long before Nirvana.

But Soundgarden's success was largely due to Nirvana. Kindof like Run DMC resurecting Aerosmith

Actually, I think there success was largely due to them being excellent musicians. There were a whole group of bands in Seattle at the time that were very talented. Nirvana just made it on the radion first.

Soundgarden is a great band and superunknown is one of my favorite albums, but it didn't really have a breakthrough song that would make everyone go 'holy sh!t, that's amazing', and shift everyone's attention away from metal.

Smells Like Teen Spirit may not sound that spectacular now, but back in 1992 it absolutely blew me away.

But, IMO, Badmotorfinger had some songs that were amazing.

For those that think Pink Floyd is overrated, have you ever read the backstory on the music? They were doing things musically and inventing new techniques of mixing that were years ahead of their time. They truely were pioneers. I bet most of you kids think the sounds are all computer-generated or made with keyboards, but primarily they were made using multi-track (as many as 24) mixing on REEL TO REEL equipment.

Plz do not insult The Doors like that.

This thread seriously blows and you people need better taste in music for the most part. Atleast no one has mentioned Jimi Hendrix.
Mistakes you guys have seriously gotten wrong
-
The Beatles - You guys just listen to Beatles "One" - If you did yourselves a favor and picked up a copy of the white album or abbey road your opinion would be changed.
Led Zeppelin - You are only listening to Stairway - Stairway is still cool and all, its just way overplayed. That does not make the band over rated. Zeppelin II and Houses of the Holy are probably some of the best albums ever released
BOB DYLAN - HAHAHAHA...you have to be kidding me. Sure he didn't have the best voice, but who the hell cares. He is probably the most influential man in music. If you ask any band nowadays who the most influential man in music was, 9/10 would say Bob Dylan. He was one of the greatest song writers of all time, and without him our era would be completely different.
The Doors - You guys are clearly underestimating Jim Morrison's abilities. His voice mixed with his lyrics are some of the best ever. He was a brilliant man and excellent poet. Do yourselves a favor and go to the book store and pick up some of his poetry books. Its some strong stuff.
-
There were others too they probably just werent as strong as these for me to remember
-
As for the others--
I personally do not like Nirvana, Oasis, Soundgarden etc., but that definitely does not mean they are over rated by any means. To each their own as one would say, but you should not base whether or not you like the band/artist on if they are over rated or not. It should be based on how influential they are. Nirvana completely revolutionized the crap as I say "grunge" genre. Hell...good for them. They deserve recognition for that. Although I do have to admit Cobain's death thing is a little overplayed but whatever.
As for Oasis, I do not really know much about them so I cannot really comment on them. But again to each their own.
The Stones - Again they have a bunch of single hits, but you have to admit its fun to listen to. You just shouldnt take them to seriously for revolutionizing music by any means.
----
Some I will completely agree with
----
KISS - hahahahahahahahahahahaha...thats all I have to say
U2 - Okay this is a tough one. To me, they just sound like any modern day pop band. For the era they came out, they do sound completely different than the rest, but I hate modern pop, therefore I dislike U2. I do support their political message though. Its good that they are getting these things out to the youth these days. Thats the only reason why I support some of these "bubblegum pop/punk" bands. I personally hate and revolt all of their music, but its good that bands like Green Day (hey they used to be good 15 years ago...) get out a political message to the kids cuz the kids will listen.
---
Sorry if this pisses off anybody, but this thread has really pushed me over as lots of you guys do not know what real music is.
Please do not come to a judgement about this until you read this whole message to get where I am coming from. Thank You.

Though that's probably largely true, I can't think of anything else quite like the Grateful Dead. They were musically very unique and one-of-a-kind.

I understand where you are coming from, and I also like the Dead, but lots of people here are stating that they are over rated.

Grateful Dead -- The reason everyone took drugs while listening to this band was because it's the only way you could enjoy them or avoid falling asleep.

Phish -- See above (cheap rip-off)

Bob Dylan -- What kind of voice is that?

Eh drugs didn't help me stay awake when I saw them. However some of their studio work is great with or without drugs.

I think the OP needs to be more specific about what he means by over-rated. If you're going by talent - then "top 300" instead of top 3 would be a piece of cake to compile. Actually, it'd be hard to narrow it down to 300. But, many of the bands mentioned were important for more reasons than simply their music playing ability. Grateful Dead - it was as much about the scene and going to the concerts as it was the music. If I could go back in time and remove anyone's vocal cords when they were an infant, it'd be Bob Dylan's. But, I still acknowledge that he was incredibly important in the music world; definitely not over-rated.

Here are two that were over-rated:
Boy George and Culture Club
Dixie's Midnight Riders (Come on Eileen) - Their hit was horrible, never deserved to get airtime, and somehow still manages to get played on the radio.

Nope, I went to James Madison. I hated UVA when I toured the campus (note: this was almost 12 years ago), although I did get in.

The Beatles and to a lesser extent Nirvana completely changed the way music was written and performed.

Anyway the answer to the question at hand:

1. Dave
2. Matthews
3. Band
4. Phish
