The only reason why the Grateful Dead were so popular is because the stoners back in the day enjoyed happy catchy music played by stoners like themselves.

You guys are funny. Calling U2, Van Halen, The Beatles, Stones, Doors, Bob Dylan, and others overrated. Shows what you know about music. They may not be producing stuff you like but that doesn't mean they're overrated. I can't stand Nirvana but without them you wouldn't have The Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Velvet Revolver. Eddie Van Halen was the father of all hair band guitarists. I bet Tom Morello would even credit Eddie as one of his influences. But I guess you'd say Buddie Rich or Brian Setzer are overrated too.
FYI Soundgarden was assembled in 1984 and Nirvana was in 1987. Nirvana just made grunge mainstream. It existed long before Nirvana.
But Soundgarden's success was largely due to Nirvana. Kindof like Run DMC resurecting Aerosmith
Actually, I think there success was largely due to them being excellent musicians. There were a whole group of bands in Seattle at the time that were very talented. Nirvana just made it on the radion first.
Soundgarden is a great band and superunknown is one of my favorite albums, but it didn't really have a breakthrough song that would make everyone go 'holy sh!t, that's amazing', and shift everyone's attention away from metal.
Smells Like Teen Spirit may not sound that spectacular now, but back in 1992 it absolutely blew me away.

For those that think Pink Floyd is overrated, have you ever read the backstory on the music? They were doing things musically and inventing new techniques of mixing that were years ahead of their time. They truely were pioneers. I bet most of you kids think the sounds are all computer-generated or made with keyboards, but primarily they were made using multi-track (as many as 24) mixing on REEL TO REEL equipment.

This thread seriously blows and you people need better taste in music for the most part. Atleast no one has mentioned Jimi Hendrix.

Though that's probably largely true, I can't think of anything else quite like the Grateful Dead. They were musically very unique and one-of-a-kind.

Bob Dylan -- What kind of voice is that?
Eh drugs didn't help me stay awake when I saw them. However some of their studio work is great with or without drugs.Originally posted by: JerYnkFan
Grateful Dead -- The reason everyone took drugs while listening to this band was because it's the only way you could enjoy them or avoid falling asleep.

Did you go to UVA? If so, that explains a lot.
