My general rule is that if I'm going 10mph over the limit, screw you I have no obligation to go out of my way to let you pass. Now if its a wide open highway, sure I'll move over, but in the case you described where I have to slow down that much and change lines twice, now I don't think I'd do it.

I hope you don't complain about tailgaters, Mr. Passive Aggressive Rolling Roadblock.

The correct proper lane discipline answer is that your speed must be flexible to the conditions around you. That means turn off the cruise control. If you're in the left lane and faster traffic behind you wants to pass, then speed up appropriately until you find a safe spot to merge over and let them pass.
Not letting traffic pass creates congested conditions behind you that is extremely dangerous. Pull your head out of your asses and drive safe.

Actually if I'm going 10 mph faster than traffic next to me and you decide to tailgate because you can't go any faster, that is extremely unsafe. It is also extremely unsafe to go much higher than 10mph faster than traffic in the next lane in a high traffic situation.

The left lane is for passing and I have no obligation to move out of your way while I am still in the process of passing.

The only congested condition created here is your not being able to go an unsafe speed on the highway. Obviously in this scenario we are all going fast enough to be able to do 10 over the limit.

"Fast enough" is not for you to decide. You are not the police. In the meantime, you're blocking traffic and breaking the law. Slower Traffic Keep Right and Keep Right Except to Pass. The congested condition is not just me, but the 3 dozen cars behind me that would also like to pass you.

Read the OP again. The scenario is only 1 car that wants to go faster. If that 1 driver got upset if the car ahead of him decided not to slow down and be inconvenienced, then he is a raging asshole. As long as you're passing people on the right and aren't hindering a line of people behind you, you are fine.

You're right I'm not the law, never claimed to be. I am not breaking the law by using the left lane to pass. Notice this whole situation is about passing people in the right lane while people behind you want to pass quicker. Read the OP before responding.

And there wouldn't be 3 dozen cars trying to go 15 mph faster than the lane directly to the right of them. It would only be you tailgating me while I brake check you until you back off.

Brake-checking is illegal. Way to prove that you're a passive aggressive driver!

Seriously... forget about your tiny dick and drive safe. Speed up, get over.

To preslove, the OP said "a car," not "1 car." Splitting hairs? Perhaps. But in real life, there is never a situation in crowded traffic where there is only 1 car behind you wanting to pass.

You guys should move to Seattle. Everyone has exactly your attitude and the left is the crowded slow lane. If 10 mph over is fast enough, then why isn't 5 mph over fast enough? Hell, the speed limit is fast enough! Lane discipline becomes a matter of opinion. That's why the law is Slower Traffic Keep Right.

No, what he just proved is he is one of those typical kiddie selfish, self-centered, arrogant, "I'm the only one in the world who matters" drivers who make it difficult to drive for everyone else. Bet his car is also one of those defective autos, too......the ones with no turn signals for lane changes or right hand turns.

I set my cruise control at whatever $$ amount over I feel I can afford. I move left to pass cars that are slower, and move right as soon as I can. I don't disengage the cruise or hammer the throttle simply because some foot-driving inconsistent 'tard suddenly feels the need to no longer drive the speed he was driving two seconds ago.
Being a truck driver several days a week, I spend a fair amount of time in my mirrors, way more than a typical car driver. You are not going to sneak up to me unawares😛
I read the traffic and will kick it down for a moment to allow a fast traveler to use the lane first. When I do that and they forget what they are about, that miffs me a bit.
Foot drivers are the bane to freeway travel, IMO. It's fine if they can be consistent, but so many will make a move to pass you, then forget what they were doing and slow down to a speed below your speed. And lock you in.
Or they slow down for a corner that absolutely does not warrant it, just because its a corner, and they are somehow scared or something. Freakin sissies!!
I set that cruise and if I'm not going into a drift because the corner is too sharp, it stays there😀

If you're in the leftmost lane and someone moving faster than you comes up behind you, either speed up or move over. You're free to move back over to the left after they go by, but in either case get outta the way!

Yep.

If I'm going 15-20mph faster than everyone else already (which usually means 15-20mph over the speed limit) then there's no reason someone should be coming up faster than me. If it's the case that they're being a dick I'll usually speed up to beside a car in the lane next to me and slow down to match his speed to be a dick to the guy behind me. There's no reason why someone should be blowing by me when I'm already going 80.

Gee... I guess you showed him! And what safe driving you practice too!

I spend avg half my day driving, so I get to see many asshole drivers. When this happens to me, I slow down to the speed limit and/or match the cars speed next to me, then watch their faces get more red as we go...it's petty, but it gets my through the day.

Guess what, you're one of those asshole drivers.

Hopefully one day you get pulled over for obstructing the flow of traffic.

If the speed limit is 55 and I am going 75-80 they can suck it.
If they tailgate me at those speeds ill lift my foot off the gas pedal

If you are going 70-75mph in the left lane (15-20 mph over) in order to pass traffic in the middle lane that is going 5-10mph slower, and almost the entire middle lane is going 5-10 slower than you, do you slow down and pull into the middle lane to let people behind you pass, or do you keep going until there is an opening that you can pull into without slowing down?

Depends. If there's a line in front of me moving at the same speed, I stay put. If not, I'll accelerate and change into the next decently open space to let them pass.

If I'm already doing 15-20 over the posted limit and I am in the far left lane and already passing by slower moving traffic I am not moving period. In fact if I'm already going that fast and you ride up on my ass I might just have to slow down for you.

Take a minute to read that and figure out how dumb you sound there. If you can't figure it out, there's no hope for you.

Yeah, I don't get these people that think they can go 15-20 over but don't think anyone should be going faster than them.

yet another one....

Do you guys going 15-20 over get pissed at people going 10 over in the left lane and not moving over?

It really doesn't matter to me how fast I'm going over the limit. If someone is coming up on me fast, I'm moving over. I'll speed up if I need to. I really don't understand people who stubbornly stay in the fast lane with a long line of cars behind them just because they're over the limit. They're creating unneeded traffic.

The point is, I am already speeding at that speed. If that still isn't fast enough for you for whatever reason, then it is your problem. Go around me. But I feel absolutely no obligation to get out of the way in this case. You want to drive 100 MPH with an open road in front of you, go rent some time at a race track or something. At least that way you'll only kill yourself when you crash. Not some family of 4 as well.

It's really funny how people like you think that people "only" going 15-20 over the limit in the fast lane are being inconsiderate of other people and a yet at the same time you think everybody else should feel obligated to move out of your way.

Wow. Is it really that hard to move over to let someone else go by? Does it somehow make you feel tough?

What a short-sighted view of the world you have.

You defy logic. Your passive aggressive stupidity makes things much less safe for the rest of us. The safest way to drive (and this has been born out by studies in the US and in other countries), is to always yield to faster traffic. The left lane is for passing. If someone comes up behind you going faster than you are, then you are required to move to allow them to pass. That law in all 50 states is for slower traffic to keep right. You are breaking the laws JUST as much as them by not yielding. Plus, speeding is speeding. 15-20 over is no different than them doing 30 over -- although they might have a higher fine or a stiffer penalty. There's no "moral" or actual difference, however.

I don't give a damn if you are doing 130 in the left lane. You are not the police. You move your ass out of the way so that they can go. How do you know they are not in an emergency situation? They could be headed to the hospital and don't have their emergency flashers on. They could be undercover police who are speeding to a scene and don't want to attract attention. Hell, they could be a pissed off garbageman, but you have no right to block them. You are breaking two laws. You've no legal or moral standing to contest what they are doing, and you should mind your own business.

People who block traffic in the left lane are the purest scourge of the earth. I wish you a painful death. You congest traffic and make America's roads less safe -- much more than speeders ever will.

You're breaking just as many laws as I am, asshole. So move it. Oh, and I never tailgate. I will, however, flash my lights if I am overtaking you at considerable speed. 50% of drivers instantly move, and I love them for it. 50% of you sit there with a glazed over stare as you continue to yap on your cellphone or eat a doughnut. Fvckers.

I look for the next open spot in the slower lane that will allow me to keep going my current speed, at least long enough to let them by
