I have no sympathy for him having to pay his own, but getting cut off for being a 3.5 student seems pretty rough...

Why is it that people who paid for their own college education are like people who graduated magna cum laude in that they feel compelled to mention it every chance they get?

WTF?! That is pretty good, IMO, for a freshman GPA. First time on your own. Lots of messing around and parties. Have to learn how to get your sh!t together on your own.

Hell, a 3.5 is a lot better than I'm doing (though I should be about that range or above now that I switched to the correct major ;):)).

I know this is a sterotypical type of statement, but I wonder if it is because he is Chinese.

Makes no sense to me.

yes , its because his parents are chinese. and chinese parents with about 80% confidence i'll say put too high expectations on their kids. I have worn down my parents and i dont think they expect as much. i have a 2.7 gpa. i am a compsci major getting an engineering degree. years of explaining that a 3.5 gpa in art history wasnt as good as a 2.7 in compsci i think finally worked. my parents help me pay. i only have like enough money to maybe pay for a year and a half of school if they decided to cut me off, thats like my emergency i am screwed fund and a lot of work went into saving that, since well school costs like $14000 a year here after rent and stuff. i think its such a bad reason to cut a kid off. i mean let them live their lives and not study all day for a change. chinese parents think thats what college is all about, just learning a trade, so you can go on to your horrible life working some job and having no life or friends or social skills since you studied all day.

i mean damn, my chinese parents, they are already unfeeling, cold, and have super high expectations. i 'd say a lot of other asian kids could say that their parents seem unloving at least in the traditional sense. i mean i know my parents care about me, but like its not like i hug them when i see them, or ever get that brady bunch feeling. i guess thats what happens after they bring up crap like cutting you off for having a low GPA, or like that you are a failure and should be sent to some other country.

That's pretty lenient. I had to be in the top 99th percentile. That means I have to be in the top 12 kids in my class.

lol. Wasn't it Lake Wobbegon where all the children were above average?
I think so. I like Keillor!

Funny, but many years ago at work we had all kinds of employee measurements. One was how much assistance you gave minus how much you received in a month.
My boss stood up at a meeting and told us that he expected everyone to have a positive total.

It would have been nicer to warn your friend, or give him one quarter to get it higher, but it's her right to not want to have to work to earn money so he can do "lots of messing around and parties." She deserves to blow the money on goofing off much more than he does.

But I'm post-college working full time, it changes your perspective on free lunches :)

Like a previous poster said, 3.5/4 for those majors, especially your freshman year.. come on. I'm asian, so I know expectations put on by your parents.

I don't know if you mentioned which school he went to, but if he's in California, a UC education, which is darn great, only costs 1500/quarter plus living expenses. You can live with several roommates and eat cheap and finish in 4-5 years and not even have debt.

Still, I believe that his parents are wrong to deny him monetary assistance without warning. He could have used the time to adapt to the new situation by transferring to another school, saving, working, etc.

That really sucks. I'm glad that education is good and cheap here in Canada. I don't have to spend a fortune.. that,s right, *I* don't. My parents don't pay for school, I do.

Yah, he is going to a California School, but is paying out of state tuition.

He just sent me a IM saying he is probably going to have to take a year off and work to save money before going back to school. Looking at his finances, he doesn't have enough money left since his mom just sprung this on him unexpectedly.

I believe he should be getting higher than 3.5 with that major. :D

Thank god my parents pay for my education if not, I'll be dead. :) can't fork out 6K for 4 months of tuition fees. I barely make it to 1500 if I were to work using all my extra time.

My parents can no longer say sh*t like that to me because I raise two of my siblings and it was not until recently that they provided me with some good financial support.

My GPA is still 3.5-ish though. It's tough get higher than A- in courses where essays make up a huge chunk of grades. I'm in the top 5% in my classes and I still get high B+/A- and rarely get A papers.

TuffGuy: Don't forget that different professors and schools have different grading standards.

I don't understand this line of reasoning. It was something that he was depending on and they suddenly decide to take it away for a stupid reason? Just because YOUR experiences were different doesn't invalidate his. Before you get pissy and call me spoiled or something, keep in mind I also pay for my college myself, I just don't like it when people go "oh well I have no sympathy because I had it different", ugh.

What about those 90%?

Those of you who paid for college themselves, what were your GPAs in High School? If I was parent, I really wouldn't pay for my kids college unless they were getting at least a 3.0.

No GPA's, don't work that way here. We have quintiles for high school, and R-score for college. Also use percentages but percentages suck and don't tell the real story most of the time. Anyway I did bad in highschool except for science in math, am doing decently good in college though. R-score of 28.6, nothing to brag about but much better than the 20-25's a lot of people seem to have.

Double Majoring in Film and Music

I guess his asian parents are not happy w/ his major...
3.5/4.0 is ok for non-technical major

this is another story if u are CS or engineering major

i dunno about film, but that is pretty low for music, imo. if it was engineering, this would definitely be out of line... but music?

Have you ever taken a Film or Music course to make such judgements?

Well, he has gotten all A's in his music classes, and mostly A's in Film. He has just gotten a few B's in other basic required classes (such as English).

His parents are either demented or just trying to play powerful to their son.

Five bucks says that they did this just to scare him off a little but didn't really mean it.
