The GPA game is for gimps.

what social aspects? I find in some ways, high-school was better for that than college, in other ways college is better (people are more mature etc) but over here you never have the same people in different classes, and nobody lives at college either. Maybe if you live in a dorm...

they "should" help but many parents equate giving zero financial support to "helping you become independant" like mine. All its helped me do is do crappy on a couple classes cause I never bought the books for them and have no money for lunch. Then I started working 25 hours a week and my grades dropped. It hasn't helped me study harder or anything else. Bah. I wouldn't want them to pay everything but I resent that they refuse to pay a penny when they waste their money on other things and I do get good grades, and I know people that get much worse grades and their parents pay every last penny.
Well, my R-score is already high enough to get into a co-op work program at uni, so if I keep it up for the next two years I want to do that. Then I'll be getting plenty of money to support myself, move out, get a car, whatever :)

That sucks... I keep a 3.7 GPA, but only because i haven't taken many hard classes so far...

His parents are absolutely right. If he is majoring in something like film or music, he needs to be in the top 10% not to end up playing violin on the street or be a cameraman for weddings and bar-mitzvahs. :) If he is not willing to put in the hard work and be good at it, it's just a waste of money. Now if he was majoring in Engineering then 3.5 would be good enough because engineers don't have to be top of their class to get good jobs.
Your friend might be looking at College as an experience, but his parents are looking at it as an investment. Maybe if he has to pay for it, he'll be more personally invested and take it more seriously.

i dunno about film, but that is pretty low for music, imo. if it was engineering, this would definitely be out of line... but music?

Well, he has gotten all A's in his music classes, and mostly A's in Film. He has just gotten a few B's in other basic required classes (such as English).

i'm not really familiar with letter grades... does B = 3.0?

Yah.

D=1.0
C=2.0
B=3.0
A=4.0

Double Majoring in Film and Music

Is a 3.5 compared to a 2.5 or a 4.0 in these majors really going to matter when it comes to getting a job in the real world? Shoot, these majors won't even get you a job in the real world. They can lead to some statifying careers, but it's based more on your talent over your grades.
