Imagine how expensive totalling your car would be not to mention the possibility of serious injury to yourself. You might think that the probabilty of an accident is low, but when you're exhausted and can barely keep your eyes open it increases dramatically. Your chances of getting a ticket for bad driving also increase. Whatever savings you'd get by not going to a motel just isn't worth it. Driving on the Interstate near the speed limit is just awful if you can barely keep your eyes open and you're ready to nod off, especially at night.

Oh yeah. I'll totally break it up...gas every couple hours, food every 5...and a motel stop in between.

I said "24 hours of driving" just because there'll be 24 total...

ipod + random = 24 hours and never hearing the same song twice.

also, snacks and drinks (though I'm not too big on the drinks if I'm driving by myself, since I hate pulling over unless absolutely necessary).

Yeah...I need my liquids though.

I can usually hold off until I need to stop for gas though (about 300 miles w/my Prelude)...or I just get gas (and food or whatever) anyway so it wasn't a total wasted stop

This will be my 3rd time making the big drive (Tx/Ok <=> Ca) so I know the route :)

Books on tape/CD will pass the time much faster than music, at least for me. So does watching DVDs, but the police probably frown on that if you're the only person in the car.

Last time I made a long trip I was in a car with no tape player and my laptop wasn't loud enough to play DVDs, so I listened to talk radio the whole way. Talk always passes the time better than music for me, probably because it's something that I can pay attention to and that makes me think as opposed to music, which causes my mind to wander aimlessly.

Music. Listen to local radio from time to time, its always good for a laugh. Particularly when you get close to a college campus and pick up their student-run stations. :D

Flashlight, tire pressure gauge, spare tire and ramps/jack, blankets ... just in case.

Lots of caffinated beverages.

I'm driving through the middle of nowhere for a big chunk of the trip unfortunately so I won't get too many local stations :(

one thing I do like doing is either buying a bunch of random cd's or borrowing them from friends.

stuff I've never heard before, so I'm not just listening to the same MP3's that I listen to at home all the time.

Just grab a big CD wallet and get some variance. Some stuff to sing to, some stuff to rock out to, some stuff for those hours where you start to get giddy and listen to stupid music to keep your attention...

Bring a small cooler with some bottles of water and a box of cheerios or something non-sticky but fairly healthy to munch on. An upset stomach will turn it into a much longer drive!

Bring a camera and don't be afraid to stop and take a picture... mostly so you can get out every hour or so and stretch your legs or something.

It's a 24-30 hour drive, don't try and do it any faster because you really can't make it much shorter and just try and enjoy it, otherwise it's going to suck.

I always listen to a variety of music on Sirius....but I switch it up to the comedy stations when the music starts to get on my nerves. Comedy seems to wake me up some, because it's not quite as "mindless" as listening to music - it makes you think a bit.

Oh, and caffeine / Red Bull helps too.

You and I would get along great! I cannot STANDDDD pulling over on a trip! For some reason it's like a goal of mine to make the best time possible to a location and any stops hinder that badly. I drive home on the weekend (~2.5 hour trip) and try to make it the whole way w/o stopping for gas, drink, or bathroom).

My g/f, on the other hand, drinks water CONSTANTLY and wants to stop like each hour and it drives me NUTS! But if that's the biggest problem we have, we're ahight.

I could do 2.5 without stopping easily...It's when the trip starts to get measured in days that I take big breaks

Beef jerky. I can't go without it for long trips. It even helps me keep awake as I'm always chewing.
