Even if JP Morgan is wrong, it was still a good night for Democrats. Won a lot of elections in in-state races, some good initiatives were passed like felons being able to vote in Florida, marijuana, etc... The Senate was just totally out of reach, but yes, Gillum and Abrams would have been icing on the cake. Oh well. But it was a win for Blue last night that is for sure.

Economy matters less in midterm election. I think the Trumpian voters are also less likely to care about that. It may be similar to how incumbency advantage has shrunk or vanished with increased polarization.

There's still a possibility of a runoff with Abrams. But it's a shame if both Florida and Georgia go to Republicans. Those are more than just small states that we needed to break the gerrymander and dysfunction. DeSantis will be able to pick 3 judges automatically, and Georgia has no judicial recourse to stop Republicans in 2020. Luckily, North Carolina was set back on track to sanity.

The left is acting like this was some grand victory. It wasn't. It's pretty normal for the team in power losing seats during the midterms. Obama lost 63. The real victory for the repubs was picking up Senate seats, which is where the power is anyway. All I see congress doing for the next two years is wasting time and not passing any legislation. i read an analysis from JP Morgan that counts this election as one of the biggest shellacking's of all time, when you factor in things like how the economy is doing. They speculated with the economy Trump had he should not have even lost control of the House.

If you want a bit of religious fundie fun, Alabama (unsurprisingly) passed Amendments 1 and 2 (other source).

Amendment 1:

Under current law, the state constitution contains no language related to the display of the Ten Commandments.

Amendment 1 does two things. First, it provides that a person is free to worship God as he or she chooses, and that a person’s religious beliefs will have no effect on his or her civil or political rights. Second, it makes clear that the Ten Commandments may be displayed on public property so long as the display meets constitutional requirements, such as being displayed along with historical or educational items. Amendment 1 also provides that no public funds may be used to defend this amendment in court.

Amendment 2:

Under current law, the state constitution does not include any language that directly relates to the importance of unborn life or the rights of unborn children, nor does it include any language that directly relates to abortion or the funding of abortions using state funds.

Amendment 2 provides that it would be the public policy of the state to recognize and support the importance of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, including the right to life; and to protect the rights of unborn children. Additionally, the amendment would make clear that the state constitution does not include a right to abortion or require the funding of an abortion using public funds.

Prior to Tuesday, FL was one of 13 states that didn't automatically restore voting rights to felons. Glad FL is moving towards some sensible policy like the majority of states.

If I had to guess, I would say Florida is a bastion of retiring baby boomers who are fully committed to the fyigm attitude. Anything that might raise their taxes, I'm pretty sure, they are against it.

Yes sorry, I don’t mean to attribute the infographic to you however that infographic is misleading.

I would consider the second largest wave in more than four decades to be impressive but I guess to each their own.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the NY Times article, as its conclusion quantifies this wave as smaller than the ones in 2006 and 2010.

...and yet with a significantly greater portion of the popular vote compared to pre-2010 districts. That's the point.

There is nothing to celebrate about these electjon results, as they indicate the further Balkanization of our country. The Dems made gains amongst the Whole Foods pumpkin spice latte coalition, but the GOP also solidified its coalition that allowed it to expand in the Senate, and you can’t blame that on gerrymandering.

What is clear is that Trump continues to exasperate the divide between the god and guns white parts of the country and urban centers, and I can’t say I would want to live in any country exclusively run by either.

California takes eons to count mail in votes so going to be a while before we have definitive calls on the so cal house races there.

FL senate gap continues to tighten Scott's lead down to 20K. Counting continues.

AZ senate is a worse mess. They have a shitload of stuff to count yet.
