For 2012 (the most recent year available), California's GDP grow at a 3.5% rate, tied for 5th highest in the country. You would think with all that communism/socialism/etc that it would have been lower on the list, no?

Take away hollywood and what do you have?

Sure is funny how you cite 2012, but there were a lot of block buster movies released in 2012. Just between the avengers and dark knight rises that is over a trillion dollars right there.

As for the opening post, what do you expect from a part time minimum wage economy? Who is going to support the economy? Do we really expect all those people working at walmart and McDonalds to be buying new cars?

It's funny you are saying that Hollywood, the most liberal part of CA, is making its economy look too good.

The owner of the bodega down the street hired 2 illegals to arrange the fruits and sweep the sideway - the American job market is fine.

All those other unemployed people must have been fired for drug use or something. Plus, they can indeed work at the same wages as the bodega fruit stand arranger and street sweeper - what, $300 a week for 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week is not enough for you college graduates?! Jeez, talk about entitlement and poor management of money,...
I was walking in my neighborhood one day, and struck up a conversation with this old guy watering his lawn. Note: HIS lawn, as in he owned it and the house.

Long retired, but asked him what he once did. He was a bowling-alley pin-stacker! Yes, exactly what you think that is- back in the day, rather than a machine, people would have to wait somewhere behind the bowling lanes and re-stand the pins after each play. This guy did that for 50 years, earned enough money to buy a very nice house (wasn't anything special back in his day, but now after LA's become a bombed-out cesspool Tijuana North compared to what it used to be, it's a very nice house) and was able to retire comfortably.

The guy laughed when I asked (almost jokingly myself) if he had gone to college for that.

Talk about those fucking days are gone forever. Even if such a job even still existed, rather than paying a wage anyone could live on, buy a house on, and retire on, it'd just be filled with a bunch of illegal immigrants, with other bone-stupid Americans insisting everyone is too good for that, and handing anyone needing such work done a silver platter to make it a total shit job, rather than one that actually paid anything. Then they'd whine about outsourcing and McJobs once again, even as the cheer the domestic version of that on.

There is silicon valley, lots of software,,, but someone has to do the dirty work to enable those developers to do their daily jobs.

Simple stuff like electricity, drinking water, gas, oil,,,,.

It appears to me commiefornia consumes more physical stuff than they produce.

California is a parasite on the ass of the rest of the union.

If only people would educate themselves.....

taxday2012table.jpg

As misleading as that chart is, it's also illustrating the opposite point you seem to be trying to make.

Basically what it says is the 60-80% category gets taxed about the same as the top 1%, while the 40-60% group gets taxed at a rate only slightly less.

In other words, the "progressive income tax" begins to fail around the 80% mark, and once it hits the 95% mark its actually becomes a "regressive income tax" that taxes you less when you make more money.

There are so many easy ways to fix this that there is absolutely no excuse either for what hasn't been done, nor for what has been done (raising taxes on the middle class) by either Dems or Repubs except that they are all liars and represent their own self-interest not their constituents.

Every time a Dem opens his/her mouth about raising taxes on the rich, they are lying - they are talking about raising taxes on the middle class.

The only real difference with Repubs is that they lower taxes on everyone - on the middle class a little bit, and on the rich a lot.

Some of the really easy ways to fix that chart :

Levy a 20% tax on any home purchased for over $500k.

Levy a 20% luxury tax on jewelry, boats, motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc) that cost more than $50k.

Stop giving tax breaks for yachts and private jets.

Stop giving tax breaks for hedge fund money managers, make them pay income tax on their fees like everyone else (they currently only pay 15%).

etc etc etc.

But of course they won't do that. Not the Dems, not the Repubs, not anyone who is crooked enough to get elected.

Well I agree completely with your description of the issue, primarily that middle-class families have an extremely difficult time saving for end-of-life. I just don't see how we can effectively address it, if we allow medicaid for people that own assets then we would have a much larger deficit. I assume your position is that government sponsorship leads to exaggerated costs of care, which I somewhat agree with but I don't think we can place the lion's share of blame on it.

My thoughts on this is that the root of all our economic evils is the erosion of middle class income. Things like medicare/social security/retirement would not have the same pitfalls with an overall larger base of better paid working pool. Who's to blame for that erosion? I probably would blame the government and quarterly profit driven corporate policy equally.

That't why Repuglicans want to eliminate the minimum wage.

One thing that chart illustrates for me, is that increasing state and local taxes wallops the hell out of the poor. The rich simply avoid them because they and their money is mobile.

http://news.yahoo.com/video/radioshack-store-closures-090545031.html

RadioShack is planning to close about 500 stores

Just days after Super Bowl Ad
They're trying to change their image; they knew they were going to close stores when they made that ad. Personally, I can't recall the last time I saw anyone go into my local radio shack. It's buried between a couple of women's clothing stores, and if my wife's in there shopping, I'm sitting in the car waiting & watching people. No one goes in Radio Shack.

And, time out. Hold on. I'm confused - I just started reading through this thread. To the people who seem to be against grandma selling her $200k house when she moves into the nursing home (instead of just giving it to the kids) and using the proceeds to help pay for her car, but also against raising taxes on anyone, (who else is going to pay for grandma then? Uh, which side are you guys on?

Educate yourself about the 12th largest economy in the world if compared to other countries.

What does commiefornia contribute to the rest of the union besides entertainment?

Where are the chemical plants, refineries, steel mills, ship yards,,, stuff that is used to make real products?

I really hope that you are not indicative of the average American. How the hell can you not know anything about the economy of a state that's almost a next door neighbour in the same country?!

Are you telling us that you're truly that ignorant about your own country?

Your chart shows a lot of basic stuff that people need - education, health care, real estate, government, finance,,, which creates no real wealth.

The only thing on that chart that creates a physical object that could be considered real wealth is construction, mining, and manufacturing.

Like I said, besides entertainment commiefornia contributes little to the rest of the union.

And you're a fucking idiot. Again, Agriculture, mining, manufacturing, fishing, etc... CA is the either the top producer or one of the top producers in the country in each of these industries. Stop posting til you get a clue. You listing entertainment only demonstrates how stupid you are.

Communistfornia contributes more than just entertainment. I eat fruit grown in the state.

The original comment was about how much money the state makes.

My question was how much does the state bring in if you subtract everything from the entertainment industry. My opinion is the entertainment industry contributes a lot of money and tax dollars to the state.

For some reason a lot of people are quick to protect this parasite of a state.
