I thought the DRS would've been more effective than it actually was considering the surface area of the wing and how much it was reduced...but in reality, it didn't seem to do anything at all.

well, it's a fact that the reduced drag is worth about 100 hp. australia has the shortest main straight on the current calendar (except for monaco, i think) so the system didn't really have a chance to play itself out. i still don't like it.

Button was much faster than Massa without the DRS and the KERS, and he still had difficulty getting around Massa with both helping. He finally got around him, but only because he was a lot faster anyway.

My recollection is that Button was barely pulling closer to Massa in the draft, so I have to question that 100hp claim.

Higher air temps should also negate some of the effectiveness of DRS, so I don't hold out much hope for Malaysia, but we will see. They might change something meantime.

I was delighted to see Petrov on the podium for the first time in his F1 career and in the interview. He did a great job today. Kind of left wondering how Kubica would have finished had he not had that horrible crash a few weeks ago.

The irony in that is they made the rear wing smaller in 2009 to help clean up the wake behind the car and hopefully aid in overtaking... but the smaller size makes the fancy new DRS less effective. :awe:

At 200 mph if it gives the 6 - 10 mph boost it could be worth 100 BHP (assuming that the cars are making 750 BHP currently).

Play around for yourself...

I would say that there was no way it gave a 6-10mph boost in the race, or anywhere near that. 1 or 2mph perhaps. It did not seem like the trailing car made much progress at all towards the lead car with the wing activated.

I would say that for Button, the wing did approximately nothing on the straight to help him catch Massa.

Perhaps with a longer straight we will see more of a gain for the trailing car?

I thought it helped the Button close on Massa after the last corner as we know following out of a corner like that is difficult, so DRS probably negates that disadvantage.

PS: You guys are lucky you don't have to listen to DC. God I hate that guy.

umm dc is great and i couldn't be happier he's with brundle in the booth.

Well, he was much better today. So there is hope for him yet.

Also, Qualy today was awesome, nail biting. Vettel is a master of final lap runs. 0.3secs covering to top 4. Should be be a great race.

Malaysian GP just over...

Interesting GP. Overtaking, tyres, pitstops, DRS, KERS were all go (or not for some).

Watch Petrov towards the end.

Epic start from Renault cars! They looked like they had the launch systems from an Aircraft carrier, the top four were all 'WTF!?'. Excellent.

Button ran a great race, but obviously the credit goes to RB and Vettel. Great to see Hiedfeld up on the podium. Kobayashi should get an award for the most overtakes in one race, in fact great overtaking all around. I think we're going to see the maturation of DRS and KERS in the next few rounds.

that was a pretty strong race. all it needed was a fight for the lead.

alonso handed 20 second penalty for causing a collision (hamilton), keeps 6th.
hamilton handed 20 second penalty for defending with 2 moves (alonso), drops to 8th.

The DRS seems to be having a bigger affect in Malaysia. I don't really like all of the rules around it though. I think that if they are going to have it, it should be available to anyone at any time on any section of the track, and it should adjust the front wing also. It seems silly to give an advantage to the following car.

Well, if everyone could use it all the time it negates the effect of having it. I like that only the car behind can use it. CART tried this with the push to pass button but the trouble with that is you use it to try to pass and the guy you are trying to pass uses it to defend.

I thought this was a very exiting race. Can't believe Alonso ran into the back of Hamilton, he could have been on the podium.

Petrov's shunt was AMAZING!!! He got some serious air! I bet that hurt when that car came crashing back down to earth.
