I know that SUV is the most profitable segment for automakers. But they have to not only match the Japanese's offerings but also rising oil prices.

Seriously, if you have a SUV, you would probably keep it. But if you planning to buy a new car, would you buy a SUV like this one? Even if you do, you have to look at the competitors out there.

Arrogant isn't going to help. Give as much rebate as you want, GM's financial isn't going to be save by a brand new SUV with nicer interior.

I predict GM will be reorganizing if not filing for chapter 11 reorganization. Unless the UAW workers give up their pension and willing to work for less pay.

I'm sorry to say, GM is pretty much done in America. (their international division is doing quite well)

you do know the Tahoe is the #1 selling SUV in America right? GM could have just let that cruise right along, but nope, they improved on the Tahoe a TREMENDOUS ammount, you can ask anyone who has sat in one, the interior on the tahoe is GM's BEST interior to date in the U.S. (GTO not with standing). The Escalade just expounds on this again and again. there is NO competition for the Tahoe anymore, the Expedition is getting redesigned and should compete, but still will NOT outsell the Tahoe.

If GM built a car that went 100 mpg, people still wouldn't buy it because it would probably break down before the tank emptied.

People buy GM for their trucks, SUVs, and other white trash automobiles. They're not interested driving a go cart.

I'm not bashing those people, I'm just saying they want these big vehicles. That's the demographic that GM and other domestic car companies cater to.

But the trend is shifting back to passenger cars. I did a research on automakers not long ago. I've also read S&P report on these automakers.

The segment that GM should focus on is the entry-level luxury car. Such as BMW 3 series, Infiniti G35 and Lexus IS/ES, Acura TL. That is a growing segment. The Cadillac CTS is a good car, but it seem weak in comparison to the compeitors.

Just my .02.

the CTS is a larger car than the 3 series, yet costs less... if you want to compare standard features, again the Caddy has more std. features and the 3 series nickle and dimes you.

I'm not saying they not going to sell anymore cars here. But their days as #1 U.S. automaker is done for.

The truck and SUV market is decreasing. Not only that, if you read my previous post, foreign car makers have their SUVs/truck in that segment too.

So there is decreasing market and increasing compeition. Not much future there.

Yet they don't sell as much as the 3 series.

These are stat of the past. Their SUVs DID sell. But what about the future. You think people will keep buying these vehicles at $3 gallon? how about $4?

Nissan released the Titan to compete with the big 3... what happened? the big 3 still were tops in the truck market.

you know how long foreign competitors have had SUV's in the market? about 10 years i would say, ATLEAST prolly more. guess what, domestics were still the top 1/2. guess what else, GM has the most fuel efficient SUV's in their respective classes.

the Tahoe can run on E85, when E85 becomes a viable alt. (not to distant) you will see them running this.

there also is the Hybrid Tahoe coming out obtainins 19/25 MPG

You're the stupid one if you think that Americans give a damn about gas prices. They complain, sure, but still buy full size SUVs. The Fit will probably tank, even with $3 gas. In any case, why are they stupid for updating a successful vehicle? It can't possibly harm them to be building the truck, no matter what people decide to buy.

GM very well might file for reorganization, but they will always continue to sell their cars in America and they will always sell very well here.

I think a dose of reality is that many people have bought domestics in the past (and arguably into the present) b/c it gave them something they wanted . . . usually hp, towing capacity, big interior room, imposing look, etc. Many of Japan Inc (particularly Toyota, Honda) give people what they need . . . fuel efficient, reliable, high resale.

High fuel prices are probably permanent which means many of the people that chose mid or large SUVs will move out of that market unless they have a true NEED (real towing).

GM and Ford will have a fighting chance for several reasons:
1) They still make good trucks/SUVs for people that use trucks/SUVs purposefully.
2) Some Americans will NEVER buy foreign . . . even for a superior product.
3) They are finally close to making decent passenger cars.
4) Both are likely to slash prices (GM already has) and workforces.

On the flipside, GM still has way too way models that have a mouse's pubic hair worth of difference. Many of these GM trucks were already in the pipeline but arguably GM probably should have considered killing one or more. More directly GM should probably kill or sell an entire division (Buick), or two (Pontiac), or three (Saab).

That's pure wishful thinking. SUV sales dropped a bit when gas was expensive, now they are back up. You people really give the American public too much credit.

Mike,

I admire your effort to defend GM's vehicle design. But what I'm arguring is that do they have ANY idea or strategic vision for the future? I don't hate SUV drivers, but how long you think it's going to be before oil price reach a new high.

And by then, would people still buy SUVs?

Gas is reaching $3 and you still releasing a SUV that does like 17-19mpg?

I mean unless gas price is going DOWN, its a little bit illogical to do so. Don't you think?

The market has changed and I think GM is failing to adapt it.

Yes, rebates do wonders for one's sales but obviously not their bottom line. Gee...I wonder why GM and Ford are in the predicament they're in today...teetering on bankruptcy. Must be because they're in the top 1/2 of the SUV market huh?

That's initial quality, that means just within the few months it rolls off the line.

American cars in general, GM in particular, are known for falling apart in the long run, while Toyota and Honda's are known for being great long term cars. That is why they have such higher resale values.

O RLY? Link that shows GM is just as good as Toyota?

GM cars are built like crap and score low on the reliability list.

this good enough for you?

Another SUV. This will sure help GM and their financial problem.

Does anyone work at GM have COMMON SENSE?

While Honda is bringing in Fit into the U.S. GM unveil a SUV.

Nice try GM.

O yes, blame the foreigners for your stupidity.

maybe if you werent Naive you would realise something.

SUV's are STILL gm's most profitable vehicles. with improved gas mileage, improved interiors, and much better looks. i predict GM SUV's to sell like hotcakes. and im serious.

The market has changed and I think GM is failing to adapt it.

so a vehicle that has been in the pipeline for 6 years, you just axe it, you kill it, you do nothing?

GM pushed these vehicles ahead to get them out.

you have MANY MANY vehicles still following including many cars.

the Hybird Tahoe which as i stated earlier gets 19/25 (25% increase) this puts its city MPG with the accord, and its highway mpg 20% less than the accord. not bad for a vehicle that can seat 7 and still tow 7000 lbs.

Old people are less likely to report problems, which is why Buick is so much higher on the list.

Cadillac, you cannot compare it to Toyota, it's a luxury brand and they use better parts.

And the rest of the GM brands rank low on that list and don't come close to Toyota or Honda.

you said that GM brands are always at the bottom and you were wrong.

Their ratings might not be the best right now but they have improved and will continue to improve. Like it or not.
