The Mazda 3 is based off the Ford C1 platform.

Also, it appears the Sedan will be a late 2004 or early 2005 model, as its coming sometime next year after the hatchback. I suspect May/June.

The hatchback will be at dealerships in most markets in Nov/Dec. Other smaller markets in Jan/Feb. The sedan, they havent given a date other than sometime after the hatchback.

but ... but... but....

its a FOCUS THOUGH!!!

[okay, me have to let go off my anti-focus prejudice]

but FORD SUCK DONKEY NADS!!

[okay andy, take your pills]

GOAT NADS! GOATTS NADNDANDNADNADSS!!!

anyway, I can't wait till this car comes out.

Man, TOTALLY ruining my plans for a car. First, this Nov/Dec, then the 9-2 April '04....ugh. What do I do til then? I guess I could always just save money til then and get a great monthly rate...

Thanks.

Damn I wanted to test drive the sedan.

Thats initial quality dumbass, that has nothing to do with reliability.

From what I've seen, initial quality correlates very heavily with long term reliability. Cars that do well in reliability reports also tend to do well in initial quality surveys and vice versa.

I don't particularly care for VWs, but Mazda has never been known for it's reliability.

And there's no reason to call him a dumbass since imo he's more in the right than you are.

Looks good.

I don't think I would ever consider a Mazda if I was getting a brand new car, though.

The only 6 speed GTIs from the factory are the special editions (337, 20th AE) which will probably be a few grand more than this Mazda. Also, both the V6 and 1.8T are rated around 180hp so I'm not sure where the 200hp number is coming from unless you are referring to the forthcoming 2.0T. Personally, I like the way the Mazda3 wagon is looking but after seeing the ABT GolfV I'd have a hard time choosing. Especially if VW drops a 200hp 2.0T in the 4 door.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm turning in my Jetta lease soon and I'll be driving my wifes '97 Civic to the train station every day. If I cared that much about reliability I'd be content, but I want fun to drive!

Usually, but not always.

In this case, Mazda's long-term reliability is better (relatively) than its initial quality, while VW's is relatively worse. Neither one is exactly stellar, though.

The 200hp figure is from the recently updated (last year) 2.8L VR6.

It now has 200hp thanks to the addition of 2 extra valves per cylinder to bump the total to 24. The older VR6 engine which you are thinking of only had 12 valves. 🙂

And yes, the new Golf/GTI V is shaping up to be a nice car indeed. I just hope they finally import a GTI PD150 with the 150hp/240lb.ft. diesel that is only available in Europe. With some slight modifications, that thing can be a beast! :Q

*cough*

180 or 200hp on a 5 or 6 speed compact. 😉

yess....but its looks ugly and is too small (though I like small fast cars).

you think the gti is UGLY?!?!? are you kidding! the yellow one looks SWEEEET

"It doesn't look like a Ford Focus. It doesn't feel like a Focus."
Gee, that's not terribly surprising considering the current Focus is not even on this platform.

Hell, only 42% of the Mazda's components are shared and some of that might be from other FoMoCo vehicles. The S40 probably has a similar amount of shared components, or maybe even less.

People have to understand the difference between platform sharing and badge engineering by now, right? Right???

Meanwhile, Mazda will introduce its Focus derivative, the Mazda3, in October in the United States. It will come as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback with targeted sales of about 70,000 units annually, about the same as current sales for the Protege and Protege5 it is replacing.
I hope that's true, but I'm skeptical. Both models are only now going on sale in the EU. Does Mazda have the capacity to start a worldwide launch within 2 months? The Mazda6 last year was on sale in the EU for a few months before it's introduction stateside.

The Mazda 3 Hatchback will debut in Q4, October is kinda early IMHO. The sedan will come sometime later next year.

Well, the 3 is being produced at the same factory that made the Protege (in Hofu City, Japan) IIRC so they should be able to churn quite a few of them out. You're right, though, October is a rather optimistic estimate.
