Wind would help the transfer / loss of heat on any surface. Your clothes would get colder faster, not just bare skin. Right?

different surfaces have different properties so no. exposure is first then layers for keeping warm.

actually if you are asking if clothes would get colder faster than in warmer weather than yes. but exposure is far more important in very cold weather than how much clothhing you have.

"Wind chill factor" - almost meaningless, except for people who want to proclaim how cold it is. It's not a matter of being that cold - it's a matter of being inappropriately dressed. If you don't have bare skin exposed, the wind chill factor is pretty irrelevant.

Well, it does also affect how quickly a bucket of water will freeze. I hate when it's this cold - it adds at least an hour to how long it takes to do chores (giving all the goats water). And, it does take a couple minutes longer getting dressed to go outside for an extended period of time (1 1/2 hours lately). But, except for my gloves being momentarily wet last night (followed by frozen, followed by *very* cold fingers - half an hour later, the 35 degree water from my faucet felt warm), I almost never come back into the house saying, "wow, I'm cold." I'm generally quite comfortable outside the entire time, regardless of how cold it gets. Same cannot be said for very hot & humid days.

I think it's mostly used as a warning for anyone driving, when I use to live in the NE I always kept a full compliment of winter clothing in the car for the season, if you had to change a tire or do an emergency repair or wait for a tow-truck you could wind up fucked in that situation without the proper clothing. As for dealing with heat and humidity nothing helps much, living in FL you do get acclimated to an extent but one still dreads the lawn work which is needed 2X a week in the summer months..

-60 windchill, damn. Even here I don't think I've ever seen that. Coldest I've seen was -50, it was a calm day so it was the actual temp but the windchill was still the same.

So yeah, have fun with that, plug in the car, wear gloves, and if spending anything more than 5 minutes outside wear a toque too.

I disagree because people are not the only thing affected. Heavy steel hinges snap merely from slamming a door, warm tires adhere directly to bare black top and, snow suits stick to benches. All of these things happen from rapid cooling caused by wind chill and not just the air temp. Growing up in cold country we lived by "dress to survive, there is no staying warm."

I'll take -50 with no windchill any day over -20 with a -30 windchill. It's a different kind of cold. What we've been getting here lately is the actual temp was in the -40's. I find that's not as bad as when there's a windchill.

Seriously, our updated forecast calls for 40F-ish and rain tomorrow, 40F-ish and rain on Monday, and then 6F on Tuesday. This on top of 8" of new snow.

This will suck.

Okay, wtf?! I thought the cold was going to be bad enough over the next couple of days. But, for the people who have heard, "too cold to snow" - okay, the colder the air, the less moisture it can carry. But seriously, 15-20F below zero, not counting the windchill, AND A FOOT OF NEW SNOW?! Some areas fairly close to me are predicted to get over 30" of snow.

*sigh* Picking up 35 bales of straw tomorrow to help keep everyone warm enough.

Yeah there's a point where any colder and it is just cold. But add the wind and it becomes horrible.

Crap...somebody forgot to close the door at the Canadian border. It is supposed to be 45F here tomorrow afternoon and drop to 4F by midnight and keep on dropping to -8F by Monday morning with a 0 to 2F above high on Monday. Rain changing to snow with 2 to 4 inches on top of the cold. SCREW this.

Close the damn door already!

It's going to be 37/17F here on Monday. Our normal is 60/42. I may actually have to break out the jacket.

I actually like when its so damn cold. Its perfect weather to go on an outdoor hike or snowshoe trip. I feel that your body, in an effort to maintain its core temp has to burn extra calories because of the cold. I feel like I always get a good workout when outdoors in the cold. I've always been a winter guy and the cold doesn't bother me. Just yesterday I was skiing at Killington VT and the temp at the base was -14, summit was -20 or so. I did have one extra layer than I usually wear but it is manageable. This is the kind of weather that removes the frailness from your body and toughens boys into men!

I just can't fathom how cold these temps 'feel'. We're going to get as cold as I can remember here tonight though. 1 degree low. With wind chills in the -10 range. Can't wait to walk into the office from the parking lot tomorrow. It's not like I keep a parka handy for Tennessee winters! :p

For Tennessee I recommend lots of thin layers.

Umm, you wont be taking your Porshe on the road any time soon.

It's all wheel drive and with blizzaks front and back. Had no problem getting out yesterday, even with our alley having like a foot of snow on the ground.

And this is why I pay a lot for rent. It might be under 50 in LA tonight. With wind chill will feel 48. Might have to wear a jacket
