I've yet to reach 1TB but wouldn't be that hard. Just get use an old box for a file server, then you can throw whatever hot deals HDs come your way. I have 2x80gb, 1x120, 1x160, 2x40gb on there right now and only turn it on when I need to. 200gb on my main shuttle box.

I hope that is a dedicated server for your files, thats what I've done. It's much safer to keep your files on a dedicated server because 1. If your main machine gets a fubared by spyware/virus, your files are at risk, 2. If you fsck up some (I plugged in a FDD power cable wrong one time, fried everything on that line, including my drive RIGHT after I installed all of my applications, was a new system build :() 3. Drives would be less likely to fail in a dedicated server because it wouldn't get as hot. 4. If your working on your computer, you can get the necessary files you need to fix the computer your working on, making life that much easier. 5. You can have more space with a dedicated server because you could get a cheap large tower...

GIGe FTW, I don't have a switch just yet and as of now I'm using a 10/100 connection and it's pretty adequate. With GIGe, I'm pretty sure accessing the drive over the network will be like accessing it locally because the only thing being the bottleneck would be the drive.

Oh, is it *really* 1TB? List all of the drives, remember, a 200GB drive is really only 186GB and a 300GB is 279GB..

Don't rain on my parade! According to the hard drive companies I have 1TB (200GB + 200GB + 200GB + 100GB + 300GB). :p

A file server is just a computer that has a bunch of hard drives that you access through your local area network?

I'd like to get 6 500GB drives and raid 5 them. Right now I have 5 80GB drives in raid 5, kinda depressing knowing that one 400 GB drive would hold more.

you should sell your current hard drives and buy 2 500 gb hard drives. that would make it more simple, and quieter.

Yup. I sorta half assedly have one, but meh.

The "cool" way to do it I guess would be to have a huge amount of storage (say 1TB) in a raid5 array on a dedicated box. Run linux on it, set it up as an nfs or samba share. The way linux works, you can mount that entire share as anything you want on your main box(es), and access it just as though it were any other drive. Of course, gigabit lan and lots of ram here is your friend.

Oh, so you don't have 1TB, you have 932GB. Sorry. Sure with another 300GB, I'll, according to you have 1TB as well but I look at things with what is actually useable, especially when comparing E-penises.

Depends, 500GB drives are very expensive especially per gigabyte. I got all of my drives from frys with the $50 mail in rebate therefore making my purchase a very good idea. So far I've got 2 200GB drives and 1 300GB I just got on black friday. Frys had a 300GB drive AGIAN 2 days ago and I kind of regret not jumping on it but I don't really need the space ATM and if I WERE to get it, I would have to reconfigure my file server.
