A file server is just a computer that has a bunch of hard drives that you access through your local area network?

Yup. I sorta half assedly have one, but meh.

The "cool" way to do it I guess would be to have a huge amount of storage (say 1TB) in a raid5 array on a dedicated box. Run linux on it, set it up as an nfs or samba share. The way linux works, you can mount that entire share as anything you want on your main box(es), and access it just as though it were any other drive. Of course, gigabit lan and lots of ram here is your friend.

Makes sense. Thanks for the idea.

What do you have that needs so much storage?

Duh. pr0n.

For some reaon i never like to rewatch the same pr0n, so it never accumulates

It's the hunt that makes it fun, huh?

The excitement of unwatched pr0n. It's like Christmas

Except that Christmas only comes once a year.

Indeed.

I am at the 2 TB mark on my main system, but 1.6 TB is currently being used up. I keep telling myself I am going to transfer it off this system to my server to free up room for pr0n, but i've been to lazy to make an attempt as of late.

You still got about 400 gigs, that's a lot of space.

man... all that data... even in raid format... so much stuff to back up. I seriously want to rip my movie collection to xvid/divx or something. Start to anyway. I have 300GB of space I could dedicate to it.. but if something fails, lots of time lost. I wish I had some cheap tape back up system I could implement.
